My father, Bud Forderer, passed away yesterday so there will be one more seat available in the south end zone. he was a devoted Cal fan and played on the freshman football team in the early 40's before heading off to WWII. He credits that to saving his life. When he went to Fort Benning for training the commander of his unit was from Alabama and Cal had beaten The Tide in the 38 Rose Bowl. Somehow he found out Dad had played at Cal so he put him in the mortar group instead of the infantry which had by far the most casualties. Just another example of the value of a Cal education.

Sorry to hear about your dad's passing. That was a great story you told.

My dad went to that '38 Rose Bowl, and he used to tell the story that Cal was up by a touchdown in a close game. They were stymied at the goal line by the Alabama defense. It was 4th and goal, and Cal's coach, Stub Allison, called timeout and sent in a play. The players didn't care for the play, and sent the play back. They then ran their own play, scored, and won the game 13-0.

I'm sure your dad will be greatly missed. My sincerest condolences to you and your family.

All the best to you and your family. Thanks for sharing a great story about your dad. I said goodbye to my dad nearly 3 years ago and still miss him today. WWII interrupted his Cal education also. He graduated in 1948.

I am touched by your love for your father. My father is why I am a Cal fan. He died in 2006. I am now grieving the loss of my mother, who died a week ago Thursday morning-just before dawn. She was the last close family member for me. As you might have noticed from recent posts, I am not dealing with the loss very well yet. I'll be nearby in section J this year. We could call it the "bear lives on" section of the stadium.

Incidently, my father and I always sat in the south end zone together. We watched Cal almost beat eventually national champion Washington in 1991 from those seats. Then went home. Within 24 hours we had to be evacuated. Cal eventually ended up with the highest final AP ranking of any bear team in the modern era (#8). The vaunted Aaron Rodgers team of 2004 ended up ranked #9 after losing to Texas Tech.

Anyway, sorry for your loss. I don't have kids so, to me, losing a parent is the hardest loss.

I was moved by your post as well. Thanks for sharing. I also have no children, so losing my parents was the toughest loss for me as well. I can understand. My father, class of '35, was the reason I became a Cal fan, and the reason why I eventually attended Cal as a student. We went to many, many Cal basketball and football games together. When he died, I became more of a Cal fan than before. My heartfelt sympathy to you for the recent loss of your mother.

bearinMN, also very sorry to hear of the loss of your father. May he be remembered fondly by you and yours. I lost my father 6 years ago and I think about him every day, as if he never left, as he had a profound influence on all of us.

Both of our fathers, like so many on this board, were products of the "greatest generation" that so often gave them great wisdom and care for life and family.

All the best in getting through a very difficult time.

sorry to hear about the passing of your dad and Cal stalwart - was he by any chance associated with the Forderer Iron Works? - used to purchase hollow metal frames and other metal construction items from the firm (which was a top-notch operation compared to todays "supposed" fabricators/suppliers who don't know plans and specs from comic books)

Thanks to everybody for your kind words. Fortunately he went quickly and peacefully. Yes, he was President of Forderer Cornice Works in SF. FCW has been relocated to Hayward and is being run by my brother. I WILL throw the rose next January. Thanks for the idea. Thanks for the Bear community.
