OK.....
But one must add Holland-Dozier-Holland and the Funk Brothers(aka Motown), Tower of Power, as well as the folks at Atlantic/Stax.
Now we got something!

Alright...pull TOP from the list....70's.

I think the POPULAR music of the 60s is by and large the best. You can find great music from any time period, but in that era you had the greatest concentration of musical artists who were both extremely talented AND massively popular. Nowadays it seems like you can be one or the other, but not both (with occasional exceptions).

I think your take makes sense.

Wow, Mick Taylor returning to the fold! I bet Woody is getting shrinkage now thinking about how Mick will show him up. The Stones won't sound so washed up and over the hill now.

+1. The absurdity of confusing "best" with "most popular with the ignorant youthful masses" is typical modern short-sightedness. Even in American popular music, a decade of Gershwin or Porter towers over any music of the 50s to the present. Dozens of songs by each of these are still well-known and loved, even though they are 80-100 years old.

Or 50's Jazz, with Miles, Coltrane, Monk... and "pop" singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra.....
