Dodger fans tend to be very good about saying they do not care about the S.F. rivalry, all while going out of their way to tell Giants fans how much they don't care.

Real Dodger fans do care. I love baseball period, but of course my Dodgers are part of that. However, YuSeeBerkeley was talking about BA people in generally hating on LA. That's real. I friggin saw it in a Honda commercial when I first got to Cal (commercial showed BA residents riding a "green" Honda while they contrasted that with LA executives rolling out of a monstrosity of a limousine). I was shocked because I saw none of that kind of thing growing up in LA. Apart from the homophobic jokes about the BA (this wasn't particular to LA though) that seemed to exist here and there, there was not much said about the BA except about how nice it was.

What a bunch of crybabies. All because I said enough with the baseball threads? Good grief. My 7 month old cries less than you guys.

Congratulations on having such a wonderful child.
No seriously, congrats on being a new parent. Sorry about my cheap shot.

Here's the thing. SoCal people always assume that when NorCal people bag on SoCal it's based in jealousy. It never occurs to them that there really are things about SoCal that aren't that great. Its kinda like how furd ppl always assume cal ppl hate Stanford bc of jealousy, when in reality it's bc furd represents everything that cal is not.

Every place in the world is different. All places have different pluses and minuses. And different places work for different types of people. When people from the south or Midwest diss NorCal, I get it. It's understandable.
NorCal isn't perfect and I can see why someone with different sensibilities than I wouldn't enjoy a lot of things about NorCal.

There is a reason I live in NorCal and not SoCal. There are a lot of things about SoCal I just don't like. Doesn't mean the place is inherently bad, it just doesn't work for me. And if you like the SoCal vibe, great.

But one thing I can't stand is when SoCal people just think its jealousy. There's a reason a lot of NorCal people don't like SoCal. Just like there are legitimate reasons cal ppl hate furd.

I think almost all of them pick the giants as west champs or wild card. The insult comes when NONE of them pick the Giants to go to the World Series

Lots of pics for the Nationals and Detroit. Are the Nationals that good or just that close to Bristol?

Until the Giants have a top 5 guy in HRs, the media will not consider them a real threat to win the WS. But the Giants win with all 25 contributing rather than a few superstars, Posey, Sandoval, Cain and Posey notwithstanding. Washington has Harper, Detroit has Cabrera and Fielder.

I don't think it's just jealousy. I actually think part of it is condescension. Part of it is the old money versus new money thing. Part of it is that there SF was more of a commercial center back in the day and that has been usurped by LA. I get it. It just was a shock that it's so out in the open (like commercials mocking LA). I'm not saying I don't like it or anything; I was just surprised.

I actually think a lot of LA is a cultural wasteland, which is weird to say because has so much diversity. Now of course places like Koreatown or Highland Park/El Sereno (tacos!) or Glendale (heavy Armenian population - shout out for Zankou Chicken) are of course brimming with culture. But I'm talking about places like where I grew up like the SF Valley, where it is just one huge strip mall and planned community housing. There is nothing else, really. You have to go over the 405 to find stuff to do and good places to eat. SF has fine culture, food and it's just flat out beautiful.

Now I did live in Pasadena and I think places like that are gems in the L.A. area. I just love how things are just so self-contained; you have it all and you don't have to go far. Great restaurants; lots of art and things to do. The San Gabriel Valley actually has a ton of California history; stuff that Huell Howser would cover. RIP.

Media predictions tend to be heavily influenced by "star power," as in the pundits will assume that the teams with the best top-line players are likely to win. This is definitely true in basketball (a player of LeBron James' caliber turns you into an instant contender) and somewhat in football (a great QB can change a team's fortunes very quickly), but baseball is so segmented and balanced that it really is more about having a good top-to-bottom team than about having a few great players (hockey is like this too).

The high percentage of predictions for the Tigers to win the World Series last year was a great example of this. Detroit had the big stars: Cabrera, Fielder, Verlander and looked like the more powerful club at first glance. The trouble is that people didn't look past that to see that the Tigers were pretty deficient on the back end of the roster: terrible bench, bad defense, bad bullpen. All that stuff added up and turned the series to the Giants' favor. Honestly, I'm impressed in the way the Giants have figured out their own "Moneyball" approach: they realized that pitching and defense had become undervalued and steered their strategy towards being great in those areas. During the last postseason run I don't think they were putting any bad defensive players on the field at any position; the defense was air-tight and really helped the pitchers stymie the powerful lineups they were facing.

The traditionalist and much of the media always undervalue pitching (especially starting pitching) by using the stupid statement that pitchers only pitch every 5 games.
Give me 3 great starting pitchers and a couple of good relievers plus scrubs, and I can hang with any team in baseball in a playoff series.

Giants on the road against the media favorite to win the West-the Dodgers.
Line on the 3 games.

19 innings pitched
9 hits
8 BB
18 SO
ERA=0.00!

Lincecum 7 walks but 0 runs and 3 hits in 5 innings.
Is the glass half full or half empty?
Watching him on TV I think he is better than last year. Batters are less balanced.

Add 7 more innings of no run ball for Giants starters.

I live in SoCal and love both SoCal and NorCal. Apparently I need to start hating one or the other.

Done
All stats just updated.
Added W-L record.
Vogelsong was arguably the Giants most reliable starter last year, but the Cards will be better rested and they hit right handers better. Should be a good challenge for Vogs. I don't know if a 5 man rotation has ever had a 0.00 era to start the season.

Holy Jinx-Thread, Batman!

Now you're updating the OP??

I'm with Eucey. But for different reasons. Someone pull the plug on this voodoo laced em-effer of a thread.

LOL,
It was only of interest as long as the streak was going.
I'm sure, after Cain bombed on Sunday, that the overall ERA is not good for the Giants. I'm equally sure that the LA starters are doing well enough. I was not planning to keep the thread active regardless of how things were going as I am now busy preparing a mock NFL draft as an OT, or more appropriately, an OS (off-season) thread.

I'm happy with how the Giants are doing. They will have their ups and downs. But they always start slow, and this year they are considerably better than in past starts. They haven't even really started hitting yet.

Exactly. The analogy I like to use is someone from Norcal going to BRO and telling them to stop talking about the Lakers and Dodgers.

No, that is UC Los Angeles type thinking, that is what they want everyone to think. We are "California" not "Northern California" we are the flagship university for the entire state. In fact more students attend Cal from Southern California than from Northern California and this has been true since after WWII when the population in the southern part of the state exploded.

A Giant thread, 49er thread Warrior thread or Raider thread has no more (or less) place here than a Dodger thread, Charger thread, Laker thread, Clipper thread or Padre thread. That said, my view is label it "OT," don't start a bunch of different threads and let people participate if they want to. If you don't want read an OT thread about the Padres, don't click on an OT thread about the Padres.
