Very impressive this early in the season. Just as a reference, Jahvid Best ran at the same Arcadia Invitational meet 6 years ago on April 6, 2007, during his senior season, and ran a 10.59. 10.46 was also Kaelin Clay's PR during his high school career.

This kid is fast. He might go down as the fastest guy to ever suit up for Cal.

Looking forward to seeing him get some carries this Fall!

Would have been a world record until 1921.

Apologies for that trivial piece of information. Kid can fly.

trivial is never a bad thing, but are you combining yards and meter records?

Nope. The 10.46 is in 100 meters.

fwiw, Jahvid ran 10.31 in the HS state finals.

Also, his 100m shows something but when does a RB ever run 100m in a straight line in a game? I think the thing that made Jahvid a good RB was his ability to cut quickly.

His cuts were crazy sharp. One cut and that's it.

Do they ever run shorter distances at these track meets? I see a ton of 100m times posted for our incoming recruits but would be much more interested to know 40 times

Ike Curtis while at Cal ran a 9.30 100 yard dash. That is roughly equivalent to a 10.2 100 meter dash time. The proration formulae fail to take into account that the slowest time is in the first 20 meters and the fastest is in the last 20 meters.

Isn't it hard to compare times at varying meets due to wind conditions? For all these guys, fast is fast but I think it would be hard to say who is better/faster. Would be nice to line them all up against one another to get the final answer.

And equipment, apparel and timing devices. Comparing the accomplishments of athletes from different eras is a lost cause. Suffice to say that Curtis was as fast or faster than any player in Cal history....

You sure about that? I thought runners peaked in the middle of the race.

Here's a chart from Usain Bolt's 2008 olympic 100m finals showing his speed at each 10m split.

Remember what a force Best was as a gunner? He basically lined up outside and raced the ball down the field. Didn't have to cut a lot. Just ran. And he didn't allow a return basically. That was huge!!
This new kid is even faster????? Wow!! I think he can do some damage right away. He's a four star recruit on top of it all. Gotta have SOME moves. He played against some pretty good high school competition and put up great numbers.

Your reply was confusing, but I think the OP was not mixing up meters and yards. Though not electronically timed in 1921

I think you cleared up my confusing comment-I was thinking that in 1921 it would have been yards, not meters, but I am wrong it seems...

Khalfani is very similar, though maybe a little more willing to take on tacklers and run through contact.

Khalfani's senior year highlights: LINK

This kid is going to be a very good back for us, especially in this offense

Times over 100m or 40yd matter because of their high correlation over distances football players actually do often run.

This is exactly right. When you see one or more guys making a big push late in the race - pulling ahead or catching up dramatically, it's not that they suddenly are running faster, they just aren't slowing down as quickly as the rest of the field. And to the comment that it's bolt just slacking off, he did in that race - but he's also the exception to every pre-conceived notion about what makes a sprinter elite. He literally represents a paradigm shift for the 100m. For the sake of the sport, I hope he is clean but unfortunately basically every other game changer in the sport in the post ped world was dirty or strongly suspected of being dirty so I can't say I would be surprised if some day he comes up positive for PED's.

With his speed - use him where he can do best - but sparingly. If he is as good as his speed he will not be staying for five years (4 + redshirt).

I think with the pace of this offense it isn't either, it is both--keep your backs fresh and fast and the defense on their heels and gassed. If Muhammad is good, he will not stay his 5th year anyway. Or save his redshirt for an actual injury. Then bring in another good back next year. And the following year. And...

thats the old jeff tedford way of thinking. you dont redshirt khalfani if he is ready to play now. you get more imaginative on how to get him on the field. line him up in the slot and get him in the open field or on reverses. can u imagine him and big on the same field? or better yet him, big and lasco on the field at the same time? thats a whole heck of a lot of speed to account for.

Aaaarrrgghhhhh.... Stop with the redshirt talk. Create a competitive environment and select the best player, regardless of class standing. I hope we get to a point when most true freshmen see significant PT.

Actually, I hope for the opposite: that there is too much talent for a true freshman to crack the 2-deeps!
Your point is certainly more relevant for the short term..

i wonder if sonny would ever be willing to put in a "speed" package

bigelow and lasco lined up on both sides of hinder, khalfani in the slot, willis in the other slot and treggs lined up out wide.

My thinking....

Given that the kind of recruits we want to sign won't be at Cal for more than three years, we might as well get three seasons of play from them instead of two......

Exactly. Figure a way to get your best athletes on the field. Fortunately, that is what Dykes says as well.
