Wasnt really paying attention but i saw various video of Cal students and campus. It mentioned that Caltech and UC Berkeley was now 40% Asian.

Believe he was discussing how some colleges were not accessible to African Americans.

Anyone watch this? Thoughts?

Let's face it...people will always correlate something with race being a barrier to entry.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2013/04/06/houston-rockets-jeremy-lin-race-harvard-interview/2059099/

^^^ example of flipside to that argument.

It is what it is, but truth of the matter is all races will think they're slighted when it comes to something.

Cal needed Jeremy Lin for equal opportunity in sports. I suppose Harvard needed him more.

Harvard doesn't give athletic scholies, but they give a ton of academic award $$ for top grades. Likely Jeremy applied for early admission and got it. Who knows if Cal even offered him a scholie for bball. Maybe only admit but walk on or partial $$?

I know several students at Harvard who are paying about what they would pay to come to Cal, academic achievement awards cover the out of state tuition there and then some!
And if you get an early admit offer from Harvard, you likely take it.

Like a business, the main goal of a University is to make a profit, and it will do everything possible to do so. Zakaria is an idiot, I wonder if he also stole the info for this article--he is making something out of nothing because this has been going on for a very long time.

C'mon man, if you are going to start a post like this, don't open it by saying you didn't pay attention. You are basically saying, I caught a glimpse of this, and made an ill-informed rash judgment, but please comment on this.

His main point regarding state institutions involved how they are recruiting out of state students because they pay more (thus opening up additional revenue), at the expense of equal or greater in-state students. This is in direct response to the cuts in funding at these institutions.

His second point involved the elite institutions (aka Ivy league) which accept a low number of asian students (20% of the incoming class at ivies are asian compared to 40% at Caltech and Berkeley [and yes, i thought Cal was 45-50% asian during my years]). Both have high admission standards yet when compared to the ivies, he was wondering why a 20% gap exists between the ivies and Berkeley.

His final point was how student-athletes received acceptance over more qualified students, he cited an Ivy admissions officer and a Princeton president, but I was unclear if this critique was directed towards the state schools, the ivies, or all of them.

Finally, he wants college acceptance to be merit based, and provide an avenue for economic mobility for the best and brightest. He did not mention african-american students in either the video or the article.

What are you guys talking about? Racial entitlement for whites or racial entitlement for Asians? Because that is what is being talked about here. The Ivies have a long history of quotas on Jews and the evidence a similar quota on Asians exists is pretty strong.

What are your reasons for thinking he's an ass?

Every time I've seen him interviewed or read something by him he comes off as a thoughtful, reasonable man. Doesn't mean he's always right, but he doesn't seem like an ass to say the least.

Entitlement is not what is being talked about here. I was simply responding to the OP when he correlated a higher percentage of Asians at Cal to meaning "barrier to entry" for African Americans.

My point is that everybody will correlate a smaller percentage of a certain ethnicity and blame it on barrier to entry. While it could be true that some universities pose a barrier to entry to African Americans, there are definitely other examples where other races are affected in their own way.

Like I said, it is what it is, but people should just be aware that the races that they claim to be "more entitled" in one thing also face their own barriers to entry in other things

However, as Golden Sloth mentioned...OP made something out of nothing

The difference between Cal and the Ivies is that the Ivies are at about 25% jewish admissions, and between 16% and 18% asian admissions. Cal and Cal Tech have about a 4% jewish admission level and a 40% asian admission level. In the Ivies, the Jewish kids are crowding out the asian admissions.

In the early part of the 20th century, the Ivies clearly discriminated against the Jews. Now, it seems they are clearly discriminating against asians, with an over-acceptance rate for Jewish kids. This is pretty common - the immigrants work harder than second and third generation kids, and the asian population is pretty heavily immigrant, at least in relation to the small number of elite college admission slots. It used to be that the jewish kids had higher scores, etc than the average population. However, that advantage is no longer the case, as can be seen by the admission rates at Cal and CalTech for that population.

There are some conspiracy theorists / anti - semitic folks who think there is a cabal of Jewish leaders who are allowing a higher population of jews into the Ivies. My take is that there is just a natural progression. If you are interested in Math and Science, perhaps you go to MIT, CalTech or Cal, instead of Brown. Not a big secret there. Perhaps more asian kids are better at that, and not as accomplished at literature, history, etc.

The biggest thing that I think drives this is the understanding that the Ivies drive jobs in NYC at the high end law firms and the high end finance firms. However, that is also changing. Law is changing and finance certainly is changing and somewhat moving away from NY. Plenty of venture firms in CA, etc. The world keep evolving.

Long time Cal football, basketball, men and women (great season, ladies), softball and baseball. And I never think about demographics until some idiot brings it up. Now I am taking a brief survey, and, by count, the teams seem to be disproportionate racially. My people are in the vast minority. I'm speaking of Irish-Americans, caucasians, or whatever label you choose. And who cares? We are bears. The qualified represent.

He was offered a spot as a preferred walk-on by Braun which was reasonable on his part--Lin had the grades, he did not have other D1 offers and Braun had a history of playing and starting walk-ons over scholarship players (and then giving them a scholarship) if they earned it. I was often critical of Braun, but I think he handled Lin's recruitment just fine.

Congratulations. Your post sets a new low on this board. The combination of unsubstantiated statistics, faulty logic/assumptions, and racial/religious stereotyping is amazing. I'm embarrassed you went to Cal (if you did).

I can find no source for your assertion that Jews are 4% of Cal students. As far as I can tell, UC does not break down application or admission rates by religion, but even if it did, the numbers are based on self reporting, so all of these numbers are questionable. Please feel free to provide your source if you have one.

Secondly, there is absolutely no basis for your concluding that jews are crowding out asians (or vice versa) at any particular university. Perhaps these two groups are crowding out other groups? The bottom line is that unless you know for sure there is a quota and/or have access to the admissions data, you have no data to base any conclusions on. The only argument that can be made is that if the system is not purely merit based (i.e., diversity and other considerations are at play), then the least qualified students admitted with special circumstances crowd out the more qualified ones.

Also, you might want to consider the fact that the largest concentrations of jews living in the US are found outside of California (less than 4% in CA). Is it really surprising that the elite Jewish students, most of whom live FAR outside of CA, don't apply to Cal but do apply to Ivy League schools? In contrast, CA is 13.6 % Asian which is a higher percentage than the entire country.

Unlike you, I'll provide a links which uses Census Data (self reported).
Jewish Percentage by State
http://www.jewishdatabank.org/Reports/Jewish_Population_in_the_United_States_2011.pdf

Asian Percentage in CA: http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/06000.html

I won't specifically discuss the rest of your dribble regarding asians being good in math, cabals you claim not to believe in, jewish students being "over accepted" (as if you know their qualifications) and not intersted in math, etc. I will simply say that your statements and lack of logic say a lot about you and your unusual focus on only Jewish students, and not much else.

And for the record, I'm in favor of 100% merit based admissions for academic programs. If that means admitted students are 100% asian (or whatever), I'm fine with that. I would prefer that race and religion not be considered, but sadly that is not politically correct (particularly at Cal).
