Wow - touching story about his history. Rooting for him to get a qualifying score.

"While on the recruiting trail for his first signing class at Cal, Dykes heard about a Pac-12 school -- "somebody from the Pacific Northwest," he says -- using Cal's APR problems against the Bears when talking to Pac-12 prospects."

Toshed!!!!

He should get a scholarship just for graduating high school alone.

Wow... considering the fact that HE was a cause in our APR falling, I find it ironic he would use that as a recruiting tactic against us

According to Cal officials, former players who have spent time on NFL rosters -- receiver Jeremy Ross (Packers), defensive back Sean Cattouse (Chargers), linebacker D.J. Holt (Redskins) -- are back in school this semester with plans to graduate. This should pump life into Cal's future APR.

This made me happy

This quote says so much about our educational problems in this state/country. Great for Takk, but how about all the other similarly situated kids who don't have his athletic ability?

Quote:

"After that, every coach was calling him that next day," JFK track and field coach Carl Sumler said. "No one knew who he was. The school didn't know he'd be a star, so they were scrambling to get him ready academically."

That's not really an educational problem...that's more of a family and parenting problem.

Since there is a much higher reproductive rate in the lower socioeconomic classes, it ill behooves our blithely dismissing these kids. As we used to say, only half-jokingly, "Society is to blame!"

:gobears:

Also, an hour before this thread was posted, three were shot, one fatally, in front of Pullman Childcare Center, a few blocks from Kennedy. Rough neighborhood.

Pulling for Takk to qualify! Kid will thrive at Cal in the classroom and on the field!

Hard not to root for this kid. I hope he gets in. One question though. I thought the APR was graduating on time? So for example DJ Holt coming back wouldn't help us right?

man that is win win ...

win one players getting that degree (that helps apr?)

win two players on campus / working out at cms
(hopefully some of that NFL ism rubs off on current players inspiring them to get that degree finish strong and to those going to the next level give them early pointers of being in the nfl today )

when is beast mode coming back to finish up ?

I don't think it helps our APR, it helps our graduation rate, which is also lacking.

I think APR applies to current scholarship players.

Kind of surprised that he didn't skip running track this year to prep for the standardized tests? Maybe he isn't that worried about it, that he feels like it will be okay??

Just when I get too cynical it is articles like this that get me back to the happy place with what college athletics can be. Go Takk, best of luck this weekend!

The fact that 3 former Bears are coming back to finish their degrees was to me one of the highlights of the article. Putting a small spotlight on that would be awesome.
