The Bear will not quit, the Bear will not die: EXCEPT maybe the new bear logo

Here's my five word description: Nice refresh except bear logo.

Beyond that, I doubt the new Bear logo will last. The jagged edge stuff is already passe. (look at the Memphis Grizzly logo, as someone mentioned.)

The reason why I don't think it will endure is not only the jagged edge design but it's contrary to the other Cal logos and "branded" ID like Oski. Most Cal stuff that has endured have classic lines or a traditional feel like the Oski logo.

Example: script Cal fits with Oski, the Campanelli, etc., block C as well. The new jagged Bear doesn't fit with anything except maybe the matte helmet...and you'd still be hard pressed to ID what it's suppose to be.

Also besides burying the logo on the football unis in black, where can you put that thing and make it look okay? Any unis at all? I don't see it. Baseball, WBB, rugby? Nada, nil, no.

The little I heard in the presentation stated wanting a more aggressive feel, etc. and they went for it regardless. Aggressive jagged lines just don't make everything cool and aggressive. Nothing wrong with aggressive but the logo lacks clarity or ease of ID. Also the nature of the jagged lines puts a date stamp on it.

If I were to submit a design critique it would be the unis are a nice update but the bear logo missed. The objective should have been aggressive feel but classic lines or compatibility with existing branding.

Okay Nike, you owe me $100,000 for that critique. Pay up you bastards.

I could have been satisfied with no changes at all. But I agree that the bear logo is the worst element of the new scheme.

The new bear is also on the pants of the Unis and within the numbers of jerseys.

Why did you start a new thread to post an answer to a question asked in the OP of another thread?

I think that question begs for its own thread.

My point is that I don't think the new bear logo will survive long term for the reasons stated. Also while it's aggressive, it's not refined and doesn't really work well with any existing UC or Cal ID, logos, etc.

There's been quite a few attempts to modernize the Cal or UC logos (the most recent last year with the net / e-logo). Also I remember in the 80s there was a lower case "cal" sticker sold in ASUC. It didn't last.

On another note, pretty sure Nike developed the logo and it shows. No sensibilities towards context or existing design elements. Nike and UO (by default) is all new, all the time because there's little tradition or new stuff makes $$$, except when it doesn't. UO kept the "O" and Donald Duck and that's it.

I suppose if Nike developed the logo, fine, cool, whatever. OTOH, why do you let a sneaker company (global as it might be) design a new logo for the football team from a very good (the best) university? Branding? Because it's free? I can live with free because you can then just dump it later, after the jagged edge design stuff wears thin and goes out completely.

The thing is, I don't think education or having the new bear logo around does much to clarify the design or how it looks. People might get use to it but it's still bad. It will still be unrefined and out of context 2 or 10 years from now. Compare that to other Cal logos. Even the Bear Paw with script Cal has some redeeming stuff in it.

I'm pretty sure none of that answers his question.

Branding
... in with the "new" ... confusing, busy image that in the yellow on white image looks like the Disney Banshee.

... out with the old ... classic Big C

-1 for Sandy and her team.
That A/V was incredibly bad beyond her endless "brand" yammering.

I think you raise very good points and you should try emailing some of the big-wigs (Sandy and/or the Nike Guy in the Gold suit) associated with the new Logo. Wouldn't hurt to try. Maybe it's not too late to do some slight modifications to it.

If all fails, Nike does stuff for Cal about every 5 years so maybe we'll see yet another rendition of the Bear Logo in 2018 or whereabouts and maybe they (or Adidas or UnderArmour or whomever) will make a better one.

edit: I think the "walking bear" would have worked just fine as a secondary logo on the sleeves and pants. It symbolizes the State of California all the way (reminiscent of the State Flag of course) and has been around for awhile (represents tradition).

At first glance, the new "Sabretooth Bear" is somewhat over-the-top so I understand your concerns about it.

the Bear logo does absolutely nothing for me
it is not unique, cool or distinctive

But THANKFULLY they kept the Cal script logo on the helmet!

He's not a bear but he's about as close as our new logo.

I actually like it in tiny fashion on the front of the helmet. It's awful on the sleeve.

Good point about the secondary logo being on the front of the helmet ... opposition will see it and be afraid, very afraid ... :p

And that "stylized" font is as permanent as the latest fad color ... soon it will look weird and silly .... and it cost Cal the traditional Big C

but I think the new Bear Logo will be just fine as it settles in. I mean, what are we talking about here, a massive change in Cal's program that will have impact well into the future?

Slow time until August and the start of Fall Camp.......
