It was time for an epic showdown: #1 Bears hosting #5 Gaels under perfect weather. Within the first 3 minutes of the game, Cal attempted a penalty kick which missed, but then we got another penalty kick which was good, putting us up by 3. But St. Marys then got a penalty kick (3-3), followed by another Cal kick (6-3), followed by another St. Marys kick (6-6). Defense really kicked in for both teams as there was no more scoring for a good chunk of the first half. But then St. Marys found some weaknesses and scored two successive tries, making the score 21-6 favoring the visitors, which is how the half ended.

Cal has always been a second half team, and today was no exception. We scored a try within the first three minutes of the second half, followed by another a few minutes later, bring the score to 21-20, favoring St. Marys. But Cal then notched their third try of the game, finally putting us ahead. I think we scored another try followed by a penalty kick before St. Mary's scored their next try. After that I lost track of the scoring sequence, but the game ended Cal 42, St. Marys 31.

I was really impressed by the Gaels - they played their hearts out and made very few mistakes. I think they were as good as UBC. They were about the same build as Cal, and had plenty of speed. Lineouts were about equal (I think each team stole a lineout from the opposition), but IMO St. Marys was slightly dominant in the scrums. One crucial difference was the conversion kicker. Twice their kicker missed relatively easy kicks following their tries, whereas our kicker, Jake Anderson, made three really tough conversions from the sidelines. Together, these accounted for a 10 point differential in Cal's favor, and may have been the ultimate deciding factor in the game. St. Marys also brought a very vocal cheering crowd, so their team had plenty of support.

Regrettably, there were some injury problems: We lost two men in the first half to injury, and a third in the second half. We also had two players leave the field for blood injury, but those were minor, and I believe they came right back.

So congrats Bears! We may get to see them one more time at Witter Field this year if Cal is chosen to host the April 27th semi-finals game, but even if not, this was a magnificent finish for our home games this season.

Excellent summary Chalcid. I was very impressed by St. Mary's. Passing was very good and speed kept them in the game. Also concerned about leg injuries.

Got back at 2am so was too tired to post after the long drive. But in my opinion, Alec Gletzer was "Player of the Game". With Cal down at halftime, Alec appeared to take the game on his shoulders in the second half, as he seemed to be in all the right places defensively and his tackling seemed to take on an aggression that seemed to be missing in the first half by the whole team. Additionally, he ran with the ball with a passion and aggression that seemed to rally the players around him. He really pounded the ball at the Gael defenders and I thought that was the difference in the game, as he was able to advance the ball in ways that created advantageous opportunities for the Bears when they really needed it. Chalcid's observation of second half dominance is right on the spot. Again, Coach Clark found the adjustments that were needed and Cal's second half ball handling and line out play improved over what we saw in the first half. And credit the team for really responding collectively. This is a very good team, (I think one of the best I've seen) and I like their mental commitment to doing whatever's needed to get a victory. I would say St. Mary's dominated line outs in the first half, but Cal had an edge in the second. I also felt the ruck play improved in the second half, and scrum action was much stronger as well. There was some very good...... no, GREAT action in the rucks, and the players really went at each other. That was some of the best action of the afternoon. St. Mary's brought a boisterous crowd with them that made the game even more fun. And the reserve match continued my feeling that the future for the Bears is really promising. The reserves just keep rollin'!!! Great collegiate rugby! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for one more game at Witter in two weeks.

Congrats to Cal on a good come from behind win and a great season so far. I wish there had been a way to watch it online or on TV. Any of you guys know why Cal doesn't stream their games online like St Mary's, BYU and a number of other schools do? Seems like it would be a great recruiting tool, a way to further keep the Cal Rugby community connected and for Cal Rugby to expand its brand. Plus, it would be good to work out the broadcasting kinks (camera work, announcers, etc.) if the P12 Network ever wants rugby content.

Hope someone can answer this. Should note that the PAC 12 Network cameras have been there the couple games I made it to this year.

I remember seeing TV cameras at only one rugby game this year - that against Stanford. And because we won so big (176-0 - jeez, I still am having trouble believing that), I suspect no one is interested in televising it - it simply was too one-sided.

Saw a guy holding some sort of equipment and I asked him if he was filming for Pac 12. He said he was with ESPN and I THINK he said ESPN Magazine? Forgot to mention that in my post. Maybe someone knows more about this?

I'll have some pics from the game in the next couple of days. I took more than usual so it is taking me a bit longer to process them.

Interesting, this wasn't one of the games I was at (where I saw pac12 cameras) so there must have been a few dates with at least a small crew.
