I was watching some spring games on ESPN. Coaches and how they handle depth charts are weird. One team had a highly rated QB who was personable, interviewed well, seemed a good leader etc. And over several scrimmages and the spring game led his competition in completion percentage by over 20 percentage points, had almost double yards per completion and attempt (which means he was more accurate even on tougher throws) and led in TDs per attempt and moved well in pocket. And still was engaged in a QB controversy. Glad we have a coach who is able to see the stats or doesn't let politics effect his depth chart .......oh wait. :-)

The difference this year is that there is not a single QB that has taken a single snap in a real game. Given the focus that was on the QB position the last few years of the JT era, Coach Dykes is in no real hurry to announce a starter from a group of untested, highly talented kids. I think it also may have something to do with his open practice policy - Practices are open, but the details may not be quite so apparent. I would think that by the 12th of August the QB stack will be complete - Kline, Hinder (with a precedence for certain packages), Boehm (3rd team and wild card formations), and Goff (Redshirt). Obviously, injuries would restack all of this, but that is the only way I see Goff seeing playing time this year.

I could see Goff playing even with Kline/Hinder both perfectly healthy. There's a reason Goff is at the top of the depth chart and it's not because of alpha order.

I just watched the A&M spring game, and frankly I was impressed. It also made me not so impressed with our offense and our OL's complete inability to block to the DL. Its not like the OL for A&M was using cut blocks or anything.

Also showed that having a really strong arm is helpful even for an uptempo spread like ours. it also made it apparent to me that Kline really needs to start. He is the only one capable of looking anything like Manziel, i.e. can throw darts, and make tough throws when out of pocket due to great arm strength. If Goff starts, which could happen because he appears slightly better at the 2 yard throws, I think it will turn out to be an epic fail by our coaches.

I also think Manziel is an NFL QB despite what some have said. He has a great arm.

It is obviously not in alphabetical order. I still think if Goff plays this season, Kline goes somewhere else.

Remember - ours was not a game, it was a scripted scrimmage with restrictions. This is A&M's first spring ever running their offense too, right? How many points did LA Tech's offense rack up against A&M last season?

You mean if Goff starts season, and plays well enough throughout the season to ensure he is the starter next year. I do have a feeling that QB depth will not be set in stone whomever wins the job to start the season. Dykes will have a shorter hook than Tedford (most coaches do).

I don't think he starts Goff unless he is completely confident he will take every meaningful snap for the whole year. He won't start a true freshman over a redshirt freshman all things being (about) equal. If Goff separates himself that much in camp, then I think Kline still goes somewhere else where he can use us three remaining years to play - not waiting around for the guy in front of him to either fail or get hurt.

masau, do you have inside information to suggest that kline is such a prima donna that if he doesn't start vs northwestern that he will transfer rather than back up a true freshman who has also never played a ncaa game?

along with the downside of sitting out a 2nd season in a row, what bcs team doesn't have any qb competition?

if zach wants 100% the job given to him, eastern washington is going to be his best option

everything i have heard suggests that all 3 of these guys are high characer & hard working potential leaders for the bears

i think both klindergoff will battle it out this august and then thru the season depending upon the starter's performance with austin running certain running focused packages

To insinuate that any of these qbs will transfer if they don't win the starting job is insulting to the players. In not one of the interviews has any of these players shown anything but the drive to win. Kline has done nothing but gush over his fellow qbs.

Could be descending uniform number, youngest to oldest, number of letters in their last names, years of eligibility left, lightest to darkest hair color ...

Could be by GPA, lowest to highest (and since Goff doesn't really have a GPA yet . . . ).

QB is not like other positions. Only one guy plays. If QB has NFL aspirations, i.e. NFL Arm and talent, he will not sit for his entire career, but will eventually try one more time to compete for the starting job. It does not mean he has low character or lacks the drive to win.

I agree that no one will transfer in 2012-2013.

Exactly right - only one guy plays. They ALL believe they can be that one guy. They won't transfer this fall, and if Goff redshirts like he should, he'll stay. If Goff starts the whole season, then for Kline to stay makes no sense from his football perspective because it is obvious that he believes he can play at a DI level. He may stay for the Cal degree - but I still think football is the driver here. Perhaps Coach Dykes is keeping Goff in the "mix" to add some motivation to Kline - it has taken on a "now or never situation" aspect for him.
