Since the other Keenan Allen thread became a marijuana debate, thought I start a new one

Here's a pretty fair analysis of KA by Yahoo

Thanks for posting. The analysis on Barkley and Woods was interesting as well.

Watching the video (all KA related plays from tOSU and USC) was informative as well. I shuddered at how frequently a wide open KA was overthrown. It's a shame he's not returning for his senior year - he would have been a superstar in this offense.

Also confirmed for me that all this talk of the niners drafting him is hogwash. They need vertical wideouts, not more big, physical slots. KA needs to play alongside a Mike Wallace / Desean type of player, not next to two guys who are his closest comps - Boldin and Crabtree. Lots of teams could use a guy like KA, but unless the niners are going to invent a new 3-slot package, it's not going to be them.

Would also add that Woods might be a lot better than people are giving him credit for. Due to the way he ran in his injury filled 2012 season, I think a lot of people are discounting his speed. He ran a 21.04 100m in HS which is pretty darn fast so I have a hard time believing his top-end speed isn't decent. He ran a 4.51 at the combine and was apparently moving much better at his pro day so he could be a low 4.4 guy in reality once he's 100%. He also has decent size (6'0", 200) only about 2 inches and a few lbs smaller than KA although he plays with much less physicality.

I still think KA21 goes in the first round. Big, steady and durable possession WRs are still of value. The guy caught a school record number of passes in 3 years. Frankly with a better QB, despite natural chemistry, he probably would have caught more while at Cal. With a good QB in the NFL, he should do better.

He caught a LOT of passes in not even three full seasons. Doubtful that a "better" QB would have added that much to the total number of balls he caught. A different QB in college might have resulted in more yards, but probably not much of a difference in total catches. In the NFL, he will be one of 3-4 equally talented receivers that the QB will spread the ball around to. He will be more efficient in the NFL; he won't get more catches.

hes a talent. hes going to be tough to matchup with in the slot when he goes up against a linebacker or safety and hes big enough to be a decent blocker as well.

but desean was an electrifying talent and still fell to the second round.

i think he will be a productive player, not a star. generally youre looking for a superstar with a 1st round pick at the WR position. he'll be a great 2 or 3 receiver.

he'll be smart to get his act together. if he goes lower then maybe it will teach him a bit of lesson. theres some likely some truth to it if people say that there are character concerns and now the failed test. even desean's primadonna antics arent something that i like about him. someone like marshawn has been able to mature, hopefully KA can do the same

Hmmm? Donald Driver retires. How about AR to KA? An accurate passer; a receiver who catches nearly everything thrown his way. Not a bad combo.

He had four starting quarterbacks throwing to him in his time at Cal: Riley, Mansion, Maynard and Bridgford....and the highest completion percentage was actually Maynard in this past season.

If he drops he will be a steal for someone.

Good point on having 4 QBs throwing to him...and I wouldn't have guessed Maynard was the best. (I guess I could have looked.) I don't think he'll slip that much, maybe a handful of slots but not that much.

As we have discussed before stats can be deceiving, especially those involving --- please make it stop  --- MAYNARD.

A few dink and dunk passes thrown to KA (and other WR's) who had to make the spectacular catchs off balance shows more the quality of the receivers than the quality of the passer. They rarely were well thrown and rarely resulted in TD's.

Imagine what would have been KA's record if a good QB were throwing to him.

Uh, well it was the same receiver(s) in all four cases. And the idea that Maynard was a "dink and dunk" passer is very off--in fact (just like Riley), those were the throws he had the most trouble with (especially swing passes) and were the most frustrating to watch.

Yards Per Completion:
2011 Maynard 12.9
2010 Riley 12.7
2012 Maynard 12.3
2010 Mansion 9.6
2012 Bridgford 8.9

I agree with your last sentence though. Keenan could have done far more with a better quarterback and especially a better offense. He'd be spectacular in the Bear Raid. I think he is going to be a steal for some NFL team. The idea that he has "character issues" is bunk. He is a good guy, including being a good brother.

i would like to believe that and by his mannerisms i always thought that he was a good guy, however, you wouldnt really know that unless you were a lot closer to the program than us fans

49ers will probably grab him if he is there at 31. Boldin is on a one-year contract and Crabtree has a voidable year contract. Ravens need WR so they'll take him at 32 if the 49ers pass.

Ultimately true, but talking with him at fan signings, seeing him interviewed, listening to what he actually says, you get a pretty good sense of a person.

I know some female students who gush about him being a great guy compared to other athletes. I actually got into a conversation with a girl at another school who complained that her school didn't have any Keenan Allens. There are a lot of (hilarious) ways to interpret that, so take it for what it's worth.
