If you're not familiar with Stanley Roberts, he does KRON's "People Behaving Badly" segments around the Bay Area. For examples, click on any of the YouTube videos below.

Or watch all his videos here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/TVman1981/videos?view=0

Roberts was on Telegraph yesterday exposing homeless punks behaving badly when he was assaulted:

That sure going to help out business on the south side. Maybe it will be the event that prompts the city to do something about these bums. Why even have sidewalks
if it's ok for people to just sit on them and impede traffic and harass potential customers?

The Daily Planet did a story about how the decline of Telegraph was overblown and businesses were doing just fine and things were perfectly safe, bless their hearts.

Wasn't the author of this article, Steve Finacom, one of the early contributors to the old GoBears mailing list and/or CyberBears.org site, the predecessors of this site? The name seems really familiar, but my memory is not what it used to be, alas.

He posted the footage which led to it.

Clearly, he doesn't approve of the fact that people live right in the middle of the street (nor do I) but I kinda have to say it serves him right. I mean, he had to know this was obviously provoking them and so, what did he expect would happen? Duh.

Perhaps we went down to provoke them into behaving badly so that he could capture exactly that.

I would suggest if he doesn't like them and wants them to leave that he possibly go about it differently. Maybe his grand strategy is to provoke them into making the city pass a law regarding loitering.

This certainly shines light on the city of Berkeley - why DON'T they do something?

I agree, he provoked them to make his story. Joke of a journalist.

Bad behavior is bad behavior......and attacking a man like that is wrong. Plain and simple. I'm not sure he was wise to do things the way he did, but that is no excuse for what the worms did to him. And it amps up the reasons why something needs to be done about the problem. I love Berkeley. But Berkeley seems like a cesspool in way too many ways. Hopefully, it won't remain that way.

He provoked them? Seriously? By standing on a public sidewalk?

Maybe we should send the OL down there to do the exact same thing and see how provoked these guys get. This was intimidation and opportunism, plain and simple. If they didn't think they had the upper hand these pussies wouldn't have done sh!t.

Everyone who's even remotely familiar with Telegraph knows this group and is aware of their permanent presence in that specific area. This incident just stands as further proof that they feel they have claimed that portion of sidewalk as their own proprietary area. They stand as a glaring example of what's wrong with Berkeley and Telegraph, which I assume was the point of the original piece and this thread.

OK I see your guys' points. Violence can't be condoned. But come on, he's putting a camera up in these guys' faces then he starts annoying an innocent DOG. Only after he wouldn't leave the poor dog alone did he get pummeled.

I do feel sympathy for the dog, but not because of anything this reporter did. That dog (among others) is ALWAYS THERE. Now the dog didn't choose that life, but nonetheless it has become territorial over a piece of turf that it cannot rightfully claim. It can't know this, but its owners can. The reporter didn't do anything to antagonize the dog or the bums. Lots of dogs get tied up outside of stores TEMPORARILY and don't react like that. It's the permanent presence at this spot that has confused the dog, but the bums get no such excuse. So IMO the dogs reaction is relevant and instructive, but far less so than the bums' reaction to the dog. They're all claiming exclusive right to turf that ain't theirs and IMO sympathizing with them or excusing their behavior for any reason contributes to the culture of tolerance and enabling of this ridiculous situation and further empowers the COB to do nothing which over time amounts to encouragement and passive solicitation.

I see your point on this too but the cameraman went up close to the dog and lit up the dog and obviously was annoying the dog. He was asked to get the camera off the dog but persisted. I think it was pretty cruel what the news reader (I am going to refuse to call him a reporter) and cameraman did.
ferCALgm2
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I wouldn't approve if the camera man went to someone's yard and did that. Or any private property, but that's the thing that gets me here, it's public property! We're letting the bum and dog have more right to this open space. The camera guy can record whatever he wants on public land. Now if he was shaking his keys or hollering at the dog, and purposely irritating it I'd be less supportive, but standing there with a camera? The bums don't own that sidewalk. If my dog had camera guy in front of her and she was barking, I'd get my dog and move her somewhere else. That or tell her it's ok and comfort her while she's barking if we don't move. I think that's what someone would do in any other case, so why not here? Oh right, they feel some sort of ownership in that area...
OldBlue1999
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't see any antagonizing by the reporter at all, but to each his own I guess. Obviously your POV dominates in Berkeley. I'll just continue using the other sidewalk across the street so I don't accidentally antagonize the dog or the bums, no big deal to me. Then when inevitably another group moves in across the street I'll just avoid that block of Telegraph altogether, again no big deal to me.

Anybody actually read the article?

He was attacked from behind at which point he held the attacked by the neck and told him not to touch him. He then started to walk away when the homeless people attacked him again, injuring him and breaking his equipment.

So not only was he cowardly attacked from behind but he was attacked by a group when walking away....for filming them and their dog. Seriously?

They need to clean this trash up from the streets.

Agreed that the city needs to clean up the trash, human or literal trash. Telegraph can be a great place but the Marin kids slumming it on telegraph are ruining the businesses.

I'd like to clarify one thing about my comments above because although I feel it was implied it might not be totally clear:

My lack of sympathy for these bums is specific to this group, with whom I am familiar, and other fully-functional people like them who make a conscious choice to live this way. I have a lot of sympathy for people suffering from mental illness who live similarly but have no realistic choice in the matter. Unfortunately we still have a long, long way to go in this country when it comes to humane treatment of those with mental illness and as a result many other homeless are sadly "gravely disabled as a result of mental disorder such that they are unable to provide for their own food, clothing and shelter and either incapable or unwilling to accept treatment voluntarily" as the standard goes, but have fallen through the cracks in our seriously flawed system. As the video confirms, these bums are nothing of the sort and they should be forced to move along...

Telegraph is not safe and it needs new businesses because it is like a ghost town. We need to tear down all the mom and pop stores and bring in successful national businesses like Krispy Kreme and Walmart. I think a new shopping center with parking is in order. This strategy has worked in the suburbs such as Antioch and Brentwood so it is certain to work in Berkeley. Kudos to the mayor for trying to make this dream a reality.

Just wow. Turn Berkeley into Brentwood and Antioch? Wow!

Start by building on people's park. A Walmart?

Ha! Not a bad idea, though you could get arrested for "attacking" someone else that way.
How about this - get 40 people to go down to the street and bang drums in their ears, blows horns at them - spray smelling stuff, deliver insects that will go land in their hair.... I'm sure there could be a ton of legal ways to protest them and annoy them enough that they just leave. Go bug them every single day. Any time they show up, rally the troops and go down there and just yell at them. Until they leave.

"ang drums in their ears, blows horns at them[?]" That's no way to fight urban nuisance. The proper thing to do is use a truck with three guys in the back and a crate full of rotten eggs.

Here is how to do it:
1) Telegraph is one way in front of Amoeba (at Telegraph and Haste);
2) Block traffic on the right hand lane of Telegraph until the lane is clear to Channing;
3) Lob egg bombs;
4) Right turn on Channing;
5) Escape to North Berkeley via Piedmont, or head for the hills via Centennial and Strawberry Canyon.

Simple.

Just put a giant shield around campus, nuke everything south of Bancroft, and start anew. Kill it with fire, it's the only way. Oh yeah, might as well take out Oakland as well. That city could use a reboot as well.

Yes, Finacom was a big contributor to the GoBears listserv community.

I met Finacom and Nad Permaul at a Cal game during the Keith Gilbertson era after having come to know of him through the GoBears listserv.
