Per SI, they're saying on the radio. Cool and big news. Even if he's a Furd.

Edit: Here's the link: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/magazine/news/20130429/jason-collins-gay-nba-player. Read the article -- it's written by Jason, and it's really good.

hope he gets signed next year so he can be the first openly gay player. career avgs of less than 4 points and 4 rebs, so might be tough with this "baggage" but he is 7' tall

oh is he not on a roster right now? lol -- he might end up with an asterisk!

I could see this leading to controversy if he's not picked up by a team next year. Was it because he is gay, or because he is 34 and an average player?

Anyways, I'm glad he came out. I look forward to a time when sexual orientation isn't an issue in sports. Maybe this is the start.

Something we finally agree on haha.

Guy might have played for Furd but this is a huge step forward.

I think it'll be a bigger deal when an NFL player comes out.

I don't follow the NBA, but I view it as more tolerant -- don't they already have an openly gay GM?

This is great, though of course my biggest hope is that it turns out to be not that big a deal.

A lot of respect for Jason Collins. You should read the essay -- it's really heartfelt and well written.

Wonder if the notion of keeping sexual secrets in the NBA and MLB will go over more smoothly because of the sexual secrets players in those and other leagues keep about what must be pretty common cheating on spouses or girlfriends that happens in many a city and that is kept on the DL. I agree with Okaydo that the NFL is a different beast.

Love the early and vocal support he's getting on Twitter (would love to see tweets from big-name players who don't play in LA):

Kobe Bryant @kobebryant
Proud of @jasoncollins34. Don't suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others #courage #support #mambaarmystandup #BYOU

Steve Nash @SteveNash
The time has come. Maximum respect. RT @Baron_Davis: I am so proud of my bro @jasoncollins34 for being real.

Baron Davis @Baron_Davis
I am so proud of my bro @jasoncollins34 for being real. #FTheHaters

And this from Bill Clinton:
I have known Jason Collins since he was Chelsea's classmate and friend at Stanford. Jason's announcement today is an important moment for professional sports and in the history of the LGBT community. It is also the straightforward statement of a good man who wants no more than what so many of us seek: to be able to be who we are; to do our work; to build families and to contribute to our communities. For so many members of the LGBT community, these simple goals remain elusive. I hope that everyone, particularly Jason's colleagues in the NBA, the media and his many fans extend to him their support and the respect he has earned.

Now Kidd in the house:
Jason Kidd @RealJasonKidd
Jason's sexuality doesn't change the fact that he is a great friend and was a great teammate.

Agreed. NBA players are viewed as being gay, anyway, by NFL players. I remember Allen Iverson saying he cried when his mother forced him to play basketball because he only wanted to play football and thought basketball players were sissies.

I've supported Scott Fujita in the past for his support of gay marriage despite the rumors of his supposed dealings with BountyGate. Just saying... :p

I hope what I'm what about to write makes sense. Tell me if it doesn't.

It seems like Jason Collins and the 3 NFL players who've been passionate advocates for gay rights have something in common.

Jason Collins is at the end of his career, or near the end.

Brendon Ayanbadejo is at the end of his career, or near the end. (He was cut by the Ravens and was born the same year as Peyton Manning.)

Chris Kluwe is at the end of his career, or near the end (Vikings just drafted a punter).

Scott Fujita, who grabbed headlines for his advocacy thanks to the Saints Super Bowl win, just retired.

Yeah, I know that in Ayanbadejo and Fujita's case they've been advocating* on behalf of gay rights for 5 years or so.

(And I'm pointing to players who are/were advocating. Ed Reed says he wouldn't care if he had a gay teammate. So would many NBA stars -- see above! -- but I'm specifically talking about headline-making advocates.)

Anyways, my point is it would be great and more effective if some player in their early to mid-20s either 1) were as passionate as the above 3 NFL players or 2) came out.

That is harder to do when you're trying to establish yourself in the league.

It also would, of course, be more effective if it was a star player.

I'm not saying Collins isn't brave for coming out, but the stakes aren't as high for him because of his age. And now he's a household name.

Every news org but ESPN has this story on their front page and as the main story. guess if espn doesnt break it, it doesnt count.

In ESPN's defense, this story has nothing to do with Tebow.

Isn't ESPN owned by Disney? Whatever, they must own it to report it.

Regardless, good for Jason Collins.

I'm sure some small part of it has to do with this story driving traffic and bringing attention to SI, a direct competitor for ESPN and ESPN Mag.

Didn't furd also have a gay NFL player, that dude who punched his boyfriend over soy sauce or underwear or some ****?

SI has a long reputation for actual journalism and is print first. Sure it's still sports but they cover serious stuff on a regular basis. ESPN is a TV network. Jason Collins and his people likely understood the difference and went with an organization with a little more journalistic integrity and is print. Doing this in print creates a lasting record. Releasing his story on ESPN would get web and air time but no real lasting permanent record. Yes there's ESPN Mag but it sucks and isn't the industry leader.

Is it wrong of me to hope that Collins dunks on someone just so Marv Albert can announce, "And Collins WITH THE FACIAL!".

A while back they also had a bunch of football players vandalize a piece of art because of its gay subject:LINK

However, I am pretty confident that Cal and Stanford are two of the more gay friendly/tolerant schools in D1.

um.. that quote isn't about the feelings of an NFL player, it's the thoughts of a 12-year-old kid.

For once I am openly supportive and proud of a Furdie. Great day for them. Good for Jason Collins.
