You mean after losing the starting job, he decided to quit. Which is ok, better to focus on something more meaningful like a degree than to recover from an injury and sit on the bench.

But to take a "medical retirement" sounds as though he accomplished something and forced to stop playing.

regardless...he did beat U$C...which is something i wish our previous QBs had managed to do

I have no knowledge of what qualifies as a medical redshirt, but it appears to be a liberal use of the provision.

His injury actually sounds terrible. Something like all the pectoral muscle was completely torn off.
