I read somewhere that for a player still not chosen in the later draft rounds, it's better for them to not get drafted and to become a free-agent instead. Can someone explain this please? thanks.

They can choose where to go. They can look at depth charts and style of play along with other things.

well i suppose you have more leeway to pick what situation you want to enter if you get offered by multiple teams

Does this really happen, or do they usually grab the first free-agent offer received before it's rescinded? Doesn't seem like they'd have much time to sit around and wait for other possible offers. Anyone know if CJ got any offers other than the Denver one?

All of the above. I see CJ Anderson as a player who will make a roster. I was surprised he wasn't drafted. Wasn't he like 220 lbs and 4.5 at the combine?

I also believe that undrafted players are not locked into a lengthy 4-5 year deal, which gives them the ability to negotiate a new contract sooner if their performance supports bigger pay day. Arian Foster is a great example of an undrafted player who performed and was able to sign a new deal after his third season. I believe DeSean Jackson had to wait after his 5th season to get a new contract.

I see your point as the FA signing happens very rapidly after the draft ends. But the agents could (should?) be researching which situation is best for their client in the last hours before the draft ends so that they can manuever folks like CJ into the best situation possible at the close.

There are only 32 teams in the NFL, and a small number of player agents. If you're not drafted, your agent should know right away what teams are interested and may offer you a contract (based on pre-draft communications between the agent and the team, and draft day acquisitions by the team).

You can make more money as a free agent than as a 7th round pick.

If you're a 6th or 7th round pick, the team isn't gonna give you any special treatment. So it's better to find a team (if you can find a team, of course) who may be a better fit for you.

CJA was hurt by sbaring carries with Isi. Most Cal fans sitting near me think he should have been used more and Isi a little less. I don't mean to knock Sofele but a little back like him needs to be a bit faster to get around the outside. Isi often couldn't make it around the corner. Bigelow also underused. I'm glad Gould was not rehired but wish him the best with the Aggies.

Jackson signed a 5 year $47MM deal in his 5th year after fulfilling his 4 year $3.4MM rookie contract.

I agree that Anderson should have been the clear workhorse. I wonder how much Gould controlled the tailback personnel at the end, though.

In any case, I wish CJ luck with regard to a professional career. Seems like a really cool guy.

According to this article in the local rag, looks like CJA was contacted by other teams, but not sure if that means an offer was given or not....
