ESPN's Joe Schad reports former Houston RB Charles Sims will now consider transferring to West Virginia or Cal.
Schad adds that Sims has been told he is not allowed to transfer to schools in the American Athletic Conference, any school on Cougars' 2013 schedule or any team in Texas. Sims reportedly wants to improve his "draft status before entering the NFL, despite previously mentioning the Supplemental Draft as a possibility.

Notes that he is already graduated and does not need to sit a year. Pretty good numbers, project as a 1st round pick.

Lets get him!

Does he have the grades to get into a graduate program?

Both offenses suit his skill set.

Both teams are Air Raid based, like Houston was before Sumlin left and he got unhappy. He's probably just looking for an offense that he already has a base understanding so he doesn't have to relearn everything and can actually play in his one remaining season.

We could sure use the depth and it would take a lot of the pressure off KM as a true freshman, giving him some time to develop a bit.

Some stats for him:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/482428/charles-sims

He had an interesting game against Louisiana Tech, 65 yards rushing in 21 carries with 2 TD's, 53 yards receiving on 11 catches. Game itself was LT winning a 56-49 defensive struggle.

I agree he would be a good pick up.

Get this guy!
He would be huge addition and improve the teams prospects in a major way.
Opportunity like this does not come around often.
Exciting news.

Isn't this the perception we are trying to get rid of. Since he will be drafted in the first round, he would simply be going to school to play football for a semester. He wouldn't even need to pass his courses.

Based on our passed grad rates, we'd get creamed in the media and everywhere else for taking a kid who, wait for it, wait for it, wont graduate. Yes, I know graduate school doesn't count, but still.

Not really. The perception we are trying to get rid of is knowingly taking marginal students who fail to keep up with their undergrad studies. In contrast, he has proven himself on the field and in the classroom. If anything, that's a perception we want.

No one will notice. And I highly doubt that grad school is included in APR. I could be wrong.

If he's already graduated he's not our problem but our opportunity.

I honestly never heard of him before this thread. But is he really first round material? He has never had a 1,000 yard season, even with Houston's relatively soft schedule.

Assuming he has the right attitude, he would be a great addition. But my first impression is that he would need to really battle Bigelow and Lasco if he wants to be the starter.

I haven't checked the graduate programs at WVU .. but I'm pretty sure Cal's are better ... Come to Berkeley Mr. Sims!

Looks like he was injured last year. But this stood out to me: The 6'1, 215-pounder is also a deft pass-catcher -- 759 yards receiving as a freshman -- and averaged a whopping 7.5 yards per carry as a sophomore for a pass-heavy offense led by Case Keenum.

He's a lot bigger than Bigelow, so that might help.

Hey, Don't knock WVU, their parks & recreation program is one of the best in the world. :bluecarrot:

He's a good back. I guess it depends on whether he is serious about getting a graduate degree and whether he could get it done in a year. If no to either of those, I'd say pass - not sending the right message. It's not as if we are a stud back away from being a championship team. If yes, then he would be a nice addition.

But, if he doesn't get his graduate degree, but stays "on track" and instead opts for a nice NFL career. That is not a problem for Cal... We could always use another alumnus RB in the NFL...

Very nice highlights ... arm tackles seem futile, good vision, fast enough.

My audiologist graduated from WVU (doctorate).
Very professional, highly skilled ... and she knows her football.
Her assessment of WVU is very similar to ours ... new QB, suspect OL, etc.
They could use Sims but it would be great if we got him.

She and her husband have a WVU decorated travel van, colors and logos,
and they drive from Hampton Roads to every home game ... long drive.
And even road games if they're "close by".

WVU is returning their 2011 starter (injured 2012 but back now and played in the spring) their 2012 starter and a JC back that supposedly kicked ass during the spring. If Sims is looking to improve his NFL stock, fighting those guys for carries at WVU isn't what he's gonna do.

Assuming the Coaching Staff wants him and that he gets into a grad program, AND the it really is down to WVU and Cal, he's coming to Cal.

You could say the same thing about Cal, no? All-world talent in Bigelow, hot prospect in Lasco and a burner in KM ... plus WV has a proven successful offense while Cal is entirely unknown.

Just playing devil's advocate here :p

My knowledgeable source is very worried about WVU's offensive line. :p
