A lot of people are referring to Tedford as if the entirety of his time here was the same. It was not. Though 2009, I believe, we were very good on the academic side of things. Academics were a priority. I vaguely recall the story about the DB who needed one class to graduate who was allowed to miss football in order to attend the class even though it negatively impacted the football team (he had a year of eligibility left and could have taken the class the next year). The later Tedford years were obviously disgusting.

Basically this. Tedford is the classic "he had it and then he lost it" guy.

(Marcus Ezeff was the DB in question, I think.)

There are a ton of sources for you to check out to find the answers - they're there.
And, whatever "standard" Tedford may have had, he failed, and because he failed, the team failed academically and athletically.

But, what the hell, he walked away with more mega-millions on top of the mega-millions he got while coaching.

The answers are where? I am not trying to be difficult, but I keep asking for a source for the assertion that Dykes has a higher standard than Tedford and for information about the differences, and no one has provided a link or source.

google or bing "Sonny Dykes" academics .... a lot of links but the stories are there about Dykes' goals and expectations ... Tedford is, at best, irrelevant.
Here's one story, which is mainly about Takk but it's good background.

JT would make a great subject for an old MTV "Behind the Music" style retrospective.

Call it "Behind the Play Calling".

Young up-and-coming OC comes in and works magic with his team.
Everyone buys into his no-nonsense style of coaching - even sitting future greats Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch for too many TO's.
Team has high per game scoring offense and good academics.
Bowl games abound.
He can do no wrong -- "in Tedford we Trust".

Then when he makes it big time, he loses his way.
He goes for the blockbuster recruits.
Stops enforcing his "no turnover" policies.
Academics slide.
Bowl games disappear.

a video of a horserace would do it also.
Long shot off to an unbelievable start, running easy, front of the pack, almost takes lead then ... stumbles, and again ... starts wandering ... looking for something ... finishes close to last
so, what difference did the great start do?

Cal coach Sonny Dykes just told me that DE/OLB Chris McCain is working his way back into good academic graces. Very good news for defense.

But does that mean he is eligible for this year?

We won't include those delusional types who think Bush didn't screw up at all.

...are you saying it's Holmoe's fault McCain is suspended? Or Dykes fault if he happened to vote Republican (I have no idea about his politics, so PLEASE don't insinuate)? Or is it Tedford's fault because he's the 1%?

Treggs' public tweet so I'll post here, what do you guys think this means:

Jared Goff ‏@JaredGoff16 10h: @BryceTreggs I TOLD YOU!

Personally I don't think it's in reference to McCain, but I guess you never know...

Watching him on the field he is.

But he does have a reputation for being a little soft (getting injured with minor injuries so often), I didn't like how he was voicing some displeasure at the coaching change, and the academic thing. I'd like to see all that change and glad that he's changing it already.

What support do you have for the statement that Dykes has a higher standard than Tedford? I am not saying you are wrong, but I am curious about what your source of info is. Can you clarify the differences in the standard under Dykes compared to the standard under Tedford?

I think the "standard" that is being discussed here is really the character of the student athlete being recruited. The current coaching staff is recruiting "student athletes" and not "4 stars" or "5 stars" per se. They want kids who want a Cal degree and to play some football.
I am sure that many of the acacdemic requirements/expectations that Tedford had for the players are the same that Dykes has. tedford appeared to get lost in enforcing his expectations and Dykes cannot.
Go Bears!!!

I don't get all the McCain hate. He's shown that he cares about winning, and isn't afraid to wear his emotions on his sleeve when he's out on the field. Some may call him soft because it seems he tends to get hurt a lot, but the other way to look at it is that he's still playing hurt, which to me is the opposite of soft. IIRC even Marshawn was hampered throughout his time here with ankle injuries, but I don't think anyone would say that he's soft.

Good on McCain, working his butt off in the classroom and weight room so he can stay and play.
Also nice to hear about Scarlett, Nickerson, Lasco and Rodgers.
Sounds like they've healed ... can't wait to watch Rodger's soft hand take in a pass then explosive YAC.

Anyone who thinks he is soft is a fool. He gets dinged up because he is a warrior who always plays 100%. Even when he's undersized, he is fearless. He may have some attitude issues off the field, but if everyone on our team had McCain's heart, we would have won a lot more games the last two seasons.

But we needed healthy bodies to go with that heart - that is what was missing too often.

Ok. And? What does that have to do with whether McCain is soft or not? He got dinged up because he is a warrior and then played through that pain/those injuries. He's not soft.
