Really sad if this is the end for Jahvid. However, after seeing replay upon replay of his injury against Oregon State, he's fortunate to have the use of his arms and legs.

I wonder if there is a team that could take a flier on him in some other capacity? You just dont see his type of speed everyday. Perhaps he could return to being a gunner? They certainly dont take the hits that a RB does.

I would love to see him turn to track and focus on making the team for Rio. He would have a decent shot - not to mention suspensions looming for our other sprinters will open the door a bit.

No reason to risk further concussions to add to those already incurred. He has the rest of his life to live.

With the signing of Reggie Bush, it was only a matter of time before the Lions cut Best. Having said that, the article seems to suggest the Lions held onto him long enough in order for Best to become a vested veteran receiving full benefits moving forward. If that's the case, what a class organization.

I read something about the Lions talking to the media like they were holding out hope but were always just holding on for him to reach full benefits status

This, about Jahvid ... very classy statement
Quote:

"Jahvid is as fine a person and professional as I have ever worked with," said Martin Mayhew, the Lions' executive vice-president of football operations and general manager. "He was the consummate teammate and always did everything asked of him. We wish Jahvid the very best in all his future endeavors and have no doubt that he will be successful in whatever path he chooses."

If true, that is quite the classy play.

Good luck to Jahvid from here on out.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles roll
ed into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full.. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed..

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things-your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions-and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.. The sand is everything else-the small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and mow the lawn.

Take care of the golf balls first-the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented. The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.' The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

Best of luck, Javid.

Cheers!

Jahvid Best's first serious concussion is a good advertisement for eliminating hurdling from football. It is illegal in high school, and should be made illegal in college and pro as well. And coaches need to get together and not allow their players to hurdle. It is a really stupid play.

A career tragically cut short. Hopefully, his concussions will not affect the remaining years of his life. A fabulous runner. May his future be one of roses.

I like this anecdote. I'm curious, what's it's origin? Did a professor at Cal actually do this?
