This reminds me of a summer I spent at Harvard. This girl with big knockers from New York was making fun of the west coast "accent." Her example was that we pronounced the names "Don" and "Dawn" the same.

"It's Daahhhhn, and Dohhhhhn!"

It's impossible to convey it in text, but I still hear that New York accent in my head.

Gyu-Don is good.

This classic donburi is believed to have been adapted from combining gyu-nabe, a Japanese hotpot that includes beef and vegetables and sukiyaki-don, a rice bowl topped with sukiyaki. "Gyu" means beef and "don" is a shortened word for "donburi" (bowl).

Ingredients (serves 4):

1 lb. beef, thinly sliced (available at most Asian markets)
3 Tbsp. white wine or sake (rice wine)
2 Tbsp. sugar
1 Tbsp. mirin (sweet rice wine)
1/8 tsp. salt
4 Tbsp. soy sauce
1 tsp. grated ginger
1 large onion, sliced
1 cup dashi or 1 tsp. dashinomoto + 1 cup water
6 cups cooked short or medium grain rice
Garnish (optional):
