I think that the NFL acts like any other NY Corporation with access to powerful lawyers and a desire to hide the truth regarding matters that affect the finances of rich and powerful people.

The legal tactics used by the NFL (smear, intimidate, and inundate) were not created yesterday.

Unfortunately just like Asbestos, Tobacco and Guns these corporations will continue to slither on.

1) My kids will not play football. None of them wants to play football, so this is rather easy to accomplish.

2) I'm beginning to question whether colleges, or high schools, should be in the business of putting their students at risk of brain damage. Schools are about developing the brain, not destroying it, and football is the only sport I can think of where brain damage is a byproduct of the game being played the way it is supposed to be played.

3) There's obviously a huge demand for glitzy presentations of big strong fast men beating the hell out of each other, and as long as the players understand the risks and are willing to live with the consequences, I suppose I could live with developmental and professional leagues. The tricky part is what happens if/when a CTE-addled former player goes postal or drives his car into a crowd, then the families of the victims sue the hell out of the league.

Boxing. Interestingly enough, from watching the film tonight: steeplechase riding (seriously wtf?). I think we'll find in the next 20 years many more - soccer players suffer tons of concussions playing the game the way it's supposed to be played (headers), as do hockey players.

I should have clarified it as a college sport; I'm not sure Cal has a boxing team anymore. Boxing certainly falls in the same category as football, but I don't think soccer does; while there are certainly a fair amount of concussions in soccer, the object of the game isn't necessarily to beat the hell out of the opponent via tackling, and without any hard data at hand I'd also figure that the number of subconcussive blows to the head in soccer is much lower than in football.

I'm also a fan of women's hockey, which frowns on checking and allows for a faster, more fluid game. That's why I'm a fan of intl. hockey over the NHL; bigger rinks and more space behind the goal make for fewer opportunities to hit somebody.
