If you are a student-athlete the NCAA will not let you throw a birthday party

Oregon wide receiver Josh Huff wanted to throw a big bash for his 22nd birthday, so he spent $1,500 to set it up, and handed out fliers to let people know that attendees would be charged a small fee so he could recoup his costs. NCAA heard about it and shut it down.

Aside from the legitimacy of this event planning, is there ANYTHING a student-athlete can do in regards to cash generation that DOESN'T run afoul of NCAA regulations? :headbang

I dunno, this seemed like it was obviously going to be a no-go to me. Could've been a huge front for Uncle Phil to pop on in and buy 500 tickets to give Huff his monthly pay-off.

I kind of agree. Trying to collect over a $1,000 by charging people to attend a party you are throwing seems like a pretty obvious no-no.

A big bash for his twentySECOND birthday ... sure, everyone does that. :p
One doesn't have to be very smart to play at NikeU.
He should be content clipping his 9 square feet of UncaPhil's lawn for his pay.

OP should change the title to "if you are a student athlete outside of the SEC..", if this was Manziel the NCAA infractions committee would be posting selfies from the party with Johnny on twitter #SWAG and looking the other way.

Yeah, because there wouldn't be ANY loopholes in allowing this.

Apparently friends of football players because Aldon Smith's now notorious party had a 10$ cover and 5$ drink fee.

I think the NCAA is right in shutting this type of thing down, but it just seems like a joke when guys like Newton and Manziel walk away with no punishments for taking larger sums of cash.

Dude, b/c he was charging money.

Easy fix. Have it be your friend that is throwing a party and collecting the money and you just happen to be there and its your bday and everyone knows it, but its not explicitly labeled as that

We can blame the big name programs for this type of extreme rules by the NCAA. On the face, it seems a bit ridiculous, but thanks to the Oklahomas, the entire SEC, Whoregon, Ohio St, SMU, there's no telling what boosters would do to send money to the athletes under the guise of being legal.

"Oregon State may not be at the level of Oregon, but at least I don't have to worry about violating NCAA policy. Time to blow out my candle, eat my cake and wash my dish."
