Starting for one of the best teams in the country...

He was ranked the #1 QB in the country coming out of high school.

Guess who was the #2 QB in the country coming out of high school in the same class ???

http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/player-Zach-Kline-101131

That's right... Sonny "The Clown" has him sitting on the bench ... behind one of the lowest ranked College Quarterbacks in the Country (Jared Goff).

Unreal !

... this is why we are 0-8 ... this year as a team.

I'd love to see Kline play more but you're acting like this is tennis or golf. Every guy on the field plays a big part in success. Do you think putting Kline behind center -- or Winston -- would turn this Cal team into Florida State?

It is all good. Sonny and many people on this board think JG should be given whatever it takes so he can develop his game. All these mistakes that he has made are perfectly acceptable because he is a true freshman QB.

We'll NEVER know...

It is telling... when Kline was interviewed after the Oregon game.

He did say... something like "I'll be ready when called upon... and be the best quarterback in the country"

Why not just start all freshmen so we can give them whatever it takes so they can all develop their games?

rankings schmankings...

BTW, Winston was the #1 ranked dual threat QB and ZK was the #2 Pro Style QB.

Funny if you look at the year prior

http://sports.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/rankings/rank-rivalspsqb/2011

Top guy sucks, next two guys are at USC and kinda suck, #6 at Texas and sucks... and then we have Kevin Hogan way down at #15

No need... we're talking about Winston and Kline (same class).

Oh yeah, Winston has been given starts... Kline has not.

Winston got to a year to redshirt right?

Jameis is 9 months older than Goff and he plays without contacts, which I don't know how he does that. But he does (they kept showing him tonight squinting at the sidelines).

Gunner Kiel was the #1 Prostyle QB. It was said plenty of times during that recruiting season that it was a weak class for QB's and only Winston may be top 5 had they been In the same class as the following year.

Yes.

Just like Kline.

The only difference between the two... Winston was allowed to start and his team is in the top 3 in the country.

While Kline has never been given a start... and Cal is now 0-8 on the season.

Yes, Jimbo Fisher is a lot smarter than our Dyke.

Ignore QB for a second. Would you intentionally play lesser skilled players at RB, WR or C?

You're right. Every guy on the field does play a big part of success.... Including QB!

There is no reason not to play the best person at every position. But, in order to do that, you have to know who the best is.

WAIT!!! So if Dykes starts Kline for three games, Cal will be in the Top 3 in the country! I didn't know it was that simple.

Yes. Muncie is right. The team would be undefeated with Kline. Unfortunately we would miss out on the Rose Bowl and head to the NC game instead. Sonny would screw that up by accepting the NC bid instead of turning it down for the RB, right Muncie???

Muncie keep posting. I love your stuff...

Muncie, you are like a 4th grader trying to make an argument...just look at his ranking!! By your infallible logic, Brian Kelly should have been fired for not playing THE NUMBER ONE Pro Style QB in the class, Gunner Kiel, for Notre Dame. Well, guess what, Kiel was beaten out in a QB competition as assessed by Kelly.
And any comparison of Winston and Kline is asinine - Florida State's and Cal's roster and talent level are about as far removed as two teams can be - have you even watched Florida State play?
Finally, do you really believe that Sonny WANTS to lose? Based on your argument, you would answer yes. Because in your mind, he is intentionally playing the inferior QB. Sonny has seen these two QBs compete in practice for a long time, and believes that Goff is the better choice right now. Based on practice reports, by the way, Kline throws lots of picks and is not reliably accurate. Sonny's job depends on his decisions, so you think he sits Kline because he is wants the team to do poorly?
By the way, I wanted Kline to win the starting job - he didn't. Get over it...

we all thought Tedford was nuts for not playing Bigelow more last year... this year was supposed to be Bigelow's coming out party, and now he's been demoted and switched positions by the new coach after subpar performance as the starting tailback.

we all thought that Tedford had an agenda for not playing Kline or Brig last year, yet the new coach also has Kline listed as the #2 QB, backing up a different quarterback than last year.

SD has pretty much switched up every player in order to find the best performers, and he has even put in Kline in the first quarter and gave Hinder some minutes, yet he keeps starting Goff.

I am open to seeing Kline start, but I will defer to SD's judgement, especially given his propensity to shuffle the depth chart. If he's shuffling the depth chart at every position, and yet the same QB starts every game, I'll take it for what it worth and all the things that may or may not say about the backups.

There is no guarantee a highly rated HS QB will transition to a high performing college QB. Cases in point: Dane Crist (ND, KU); Garret Gilbert (UT, SMU); Jake Heaps (BYU, KU). Review the Elite 11 guys over the last 10 years or so; the success rate is roughly 50%. Oh yeah, Johnny Manziel and Marcus Mariota were rated 22 and 34 respectively by Scout (both 3 stars). What do you make of those assessments? I would like to have seen Kline get more opportunity, if only because I don't believe you can adequately evaluate performance strictly on the basis of practice reps but I'm not sure he showed in what limited game opportunity he's had that th team would be significantly more successful.

You're just saying that because you know nothing about football. Muncie played the game, and therefore you are an idiot for disagreeing with him.

Dykes is so stupid. He needs a lesson from Muncie. Sure, Goff won the job in Spring Ball, and then again in the open battle after the Oregon fiasco, and yet again after Oregon State. But at the end of the day, the coaches shouldn't start the guy who beats out the other in an open competition. Instead, they should start whomever Muncie tells them to start.

Goff isn't the issue. His numbers really aren't that bad. He's not Heisman level, but he isn't bad.

The 26 sacks he's received speak of issues with the O-line.

The fact that it takes 12 rushers to reach 1000 yards on the season speaks to the lack of a rushing threat so the defense can pin their ears back and defend the run only.
