We offer one more assessment of the Cal Bear prospects from a long-time Bay Area sports writer - David Bush - who provides us with a professional and experienced perspective.

If a majority of this coaching staff comes back, I'd vote for "down."

Reading this reminded me of an earlier speech by Dykes when he first arrived, saying his system would make adjustments and play to the strengths of players. We all were hopeful.

A year later, he's staying with 4-3 defense to the advantage of his DC, because that is all he knows. We do not have the right personnel for 4-3 defense. In addition he's throwing out existing players to make room for new recruits who fit his system better.

During the summer he said this team would surprise a lot of people. He himself surprised a lot of people.

I don't count on all the WRs and star players returning.

Hibernation. Except for Sonny. He will be back selling used late model Chevys by next Saturday.

I think Sonny first has to make Cal rise to the next level of PAC-12 excellence -- the Colorado Buffaloes.

I present to you this quote from our DC:

"When you're playing as bad as we have played, the only direction we can go is up."

That was given on 10/4/2013. Somehow, we continued to do worse.

We are not the typical fair weather entertain-me fans here. But where do the other 40k needed fans go from here? Say what you like about "next years team" and yes, Sonny's promises will have the boys shining, sweating, and bulking up..along with a few 4 star recruits..but when does this larger, much needed, group of Bear fans come back? The students are laughing at the team now..the Old Blues have given up..and the community and university could care less - even if the trade off is that CMS becomes a monster truck venue. Can the Bears bring back any decent fans with 3 or 4 wins next season? I don't even see those wins. Why become a new or restored Cal football fan? Relying on "The Play" rewinds every year isn't going to cut it anymore..certainly not for most fans wanting to see Cal win now.

GreyBear - he hired the worst DC I've seen in 33 years of watching football... how can I have confidence?

We didn't have the personnel for the 3-4 either. Face it - we didn't have the personnel.
