First Cal game my wife ever went to and she has been a fan ever since.

I remember when we only had 8 teams in the Pac 12, but TVs were so small we couldn't even fit them all on the screen!

I also remember a Cal team that blew these guys out of the water, with 498 average yards over four games! (Um, this year.)

I thought the one a few weeks later at 'Furd was even better. 30 years from now I hope I am not still saying that, though. Actually, 30 years from now, I'll be happy to be saying anything...

College football was more enjoyable then. The last touchdown celebration was wonderful.

Probably be a penalty today.

I was living in Hawaii at the time and don't recall seeing any of the games. With few channels back then, very few regional college games were televised to Hawaii back then. What an exciting team! Thanks for posting the highlights of the SC victory. What a courageous game by Chuck Muncie fighting through his ankle injury! He is the only fb player who wore glasses that I can remember. How did he keep them on straight with all of the ferocious hits he took every game?

Oh yah, we were good. I guess Mike White forgot about that little thing called 'going to class'. Oh well, sure was fun to watch us when we were a good football team, blocking and tackling and huddling and winning.
Go Bears.

Thanks for posting this. I was a senior in high school and a USC fan. I had no idea who or what Cal was. SC was on tv every week and as Chris Schenkel (the announcer) said, Cal hadn't been on tv for 4 years.

Yep, the best Cal performance in an SC game I've seen in 40 years followed 3 weeks later by an even better performance, the best Cal performance in a Big Game I've seen in 40 years.

The disappointment of not getting to the Rose Bowl was tempered by the idea that we were still going to be good, we might get there the next season, or soon thereafter. We're still waiting.

I really enjoyed that - thank you!

In addition to the no TV in 4 years, I also noted speed referenced as 9.4, that would be 100 yards. Also, the short goal posts...

Good stuff.

or in this case...autumn morning. Thank you for sharing this...remember that game very well. It was nice to hear Chris Schenkel and Bud Wilkinson again, too...sure brings back memories...really.

Thanks for sharing this. Still one of my clearest and best memories of Cal football. The only thing I would have added was that amazing goal line stand late in the first half. When the Bears held, you just knew we were going to be triumphant that day.

Wow, you used to live in Hawaii back then?

Thank you for this. I wasn't born back then, but this gave me goosebumps.

Cal is best when they're a balanced attack!

Go Bears!

Mine too! I don't recall a lot about the game but the one thing that I will always remember is the crowd. The student section was amazingly loud and electrifying. I had been to some World Series games with the A's but that was like a golf match compared to this.

Haha. Didn't realize that Bob Griese wore glasses. And you found the photo at nerdbaseball.com?

Since few college games were on TV in Hawaii, I used to take the bus from in front of Kenny's at School and Kam Hwy to the brand new Aloha stadium to watch Rainbow football. And I recall watching Cal barely squeak by UH in a mudbowl at the old downtown stadium in 1968 (?). Had to pay off a bunch of friendly bets because I was sure that Cal would kick their okoles. The first of many losing bets on Cal teams.

I was there and it was one of the best days I have ever spent in Memorial, a true treasured memory.

I was there too, as a Freshman. Student season tickets back then were $10. Not sure what they are now. What an awesome game. Called my USC buddy (also a Freshman) after the game to rub it in. Figured I might not get many chances for that down the road. I remember walking past the frats on the way home and everyone was in a great, celebratory mood. When we got back to the dorms (Ehrman Hall) someone told me that the crowd (student section especially) was so loud that it echoed in the broadcast booth such that Schenkel and Wilkinson had a difficult time hearing and being heard. We showed the country what we had back then, and it was great! Go Bears!
