Nice payday(s) for the league.

Well it ends up costing about $700k-1million for teams to go to a bowl game and throw their entourages some parties, and the P12 will likely be subsidizing unsold tickets, so the lower tiers bowls probably end up as money losers. In the end the conference really only makes money on the Rose Bowl, 2nd BCS bowl when it happens, Alamo and Holiday Bowls.

It's definitely worth playing the extra bowls even if not profitable since it helps the league's exposure and gets those teams extra practice time.

Wow, Oregon State v Boise St in Hawaii with a $650k payout. That's gotta be a shoestring budget there. But that sure is better than a $325k payout to play on the blue field monstrosity in Boise.

I think it's likely that next years' P12 bowl payout with the new playoff system and Rose Bowl contract will be $80+ million. That's going to be some serious cash coming in. And everyone in the P12 - and all 5 major BCS conferences - can really only spend it on A) football coaching, B) athletic facilities and C) subsidizing non-rev sports. Though I'd hope AD's are smart enough to try to capitalize on the TV money bubble to set up endowments and not spend it all now.

The Pac-12 should have had an additional BCS bid, but Oregon had to lose to Arizona allowing Clemson and Oklahoma (both of whom are ranked lower than the Oregon) to win the politics game. Meanwhile the Pac-12 loses out on an additional 18 million (a little over 1 Mill per school) that could have gone to buying out Buh.

The 2nd BCS bowl game only pays 6 million, not the full 18 million.

Bad luck that the Fiesta Bowl was last on selection rotation this year. They would obviously rather had Oregon over UCF, but when you have the last pick, you get the Big East team.

Conference #2:
..ACC - 3.97 M
..Big Ten - 4.25 M
..Big-12 - 3.63 M
..Pac-12 - 3.18 M
..SEC - 4.25 M

Conference #3:
..ACC - 2.28 M
..Big Ten - 3.5 M
..Big-12 - 3.18 M
..Pac-12 - 2.08 M
..SEC - 3.65 M

Conference #4:
..ACC - 2 M
..Big Ten - 2.73 M
..Big-12 - 3.33 M
..Pac-12 - 2 M
..SEC - 3.5 M

Conference #5:
..ACC - 1.7 M
..Big Ten - 3.33 M
..Big-12 - 2.08 M
..Pac-12 - 1.1 M
..SEC - 2.93 M

I could go on, but suffice it to say the payout for the Big Ten's #5 bowl, the Big-12's #4 bowl, the SEC's #4 bowl are greater than the payout for the Pac-12's #2 bowl. That is a bad deal, and it is only going to get bigger as the the Big Ten and SEC entered into a special agreement to partially guarantee a second big money bowl. I support Larry Scott, but I hope he is scheming to better the bowl payouts.

Wow, Pac-12 and Oregon got hosed. 2 teams ranked behind Oregon in the BCS rankings get BCS bowl nods? What's the point of the BCS rankings when you do something like this. The Pac-12, considered the 2nd best conference by such rankings, don't get the benefit of the doubt.

Actually, the P12 is the best conference this year according to Sagarin. And as divisions, both the P12N and P12S are better than either SEC division.

Why does the Pac-12 get such crummy payouts? Do they have deals with bowl games that are that inferior to the Big 10, and SEC?

This is the last year of the current deals. Next year begins a new cycle.

If the 2nd team from a conference makes a BCS bowl and the payout is only $6 million, what happens to the rest of the $12 million?

Essentially, it was never there. The BCS agreement pools the TV money and sets the payment system. I guess you could also say the BCS conferences agreed to reduce their yearly variance and assigned the big money to the guaranteed slots - if a 2nd team got the full payment, the full payment would be a lot less than $18 million, and there would be 100x more shenanigans involving voting than when kneepads brown was in action.

ND I believe agreed to a yearly payment of ~$1 million so they don't get a windfall when they make it, but the money is consistent, and non AQ conferences like the MAC, MWC, etc would only get that $6 million if they make a bowl.

The bowls also somewhat benefit from the BCS attempts to even out revenue - well they benefit by spreading around the lame ducks. Like the Fiesta gets UCF this year, but the Big East or non AQ team is pushed off on a different bowl other years. Even the Rose had to take a non AQ to play ball in the system.
