There's this place in Oakland. I think it's called Denny's. Also, the International House of Pancakes in Walnut Creek is pretty good, as well.

Reminds me of a trip some friends and I took from Ann Arbor to watch Michigan play in the NCAA tourney in Lexington, KY. On Sunday morning, we were feeling a bit peckish and probably more than a bit hungover, and we wanted to find a good breakfast place.

We wandered around and asked a few passers-by where a good breakfast place could be found. After the third or fourth person started their answer with, "Well, there's a Shoney's a few blocks away..." we decided we were on our own for finding some grub.

Edit: Jeez...my posts are beginning to sound like they were written by Abraham Simpson. I'm getting old!

Many of the East Bay breakfast joints have shared histories. For example, Rick from Rick and Ann's started out at Bette's, and you'll see a lot of similarities in their pancakes and homefries. I knew a few people who have done stints at the Royal, Bette's, Rick and Ann's, FatApples, etc.

Does anybody else remember Fats in Montclair? It's long closed now, but was a little hole in the wall right around the corner from Crogans on Moraga. They used to make souffl eggs. Best thing ever. I used to eat them all the time as a kid, along with a chocolate or mocha milkshake. Turns out they're actually very easy to make, so I do them at home now because I've never seen them on a menu anywhere else.

[Not my picture. I put grated cheddar, black beans, avocado, green onion and Tapatio on mine when they come out.]

Lois the Pie Queen in Oakland - especially if you like Fried Chicken breakfasts. Sam's Log Cabin in Albany also makes great fried chicken wings.

I dig the Reggie Jackson Special at Lois The Pie Queen. 2 eggs, two country fried pork chops, great grits (with Crystal hot sauce) and a very good biscuit. My favorite hangover breakfast.

Oh I should also mention the best pancakes I've ever eaten ANYWHERE were at Somerset Cafe in Rockridge......lemon ricotta pancakes. Even my wife can't make me orgasm like those pancakes did.

Your orgasm days are over, my friend - Somerset has closed. I've never tried their breakfasts or pancakes, but judging by their dinners they won't be missed.

Sadly Cafe Fanny is no more

Yes very sad. My favorite restaurant period. I loved standing at the counter. The simple food. The great coffee. The parade of characters. Had to have gone there 100 times and never tired of it.

You can still buy Cafe Fanny granola at various markets around the Bay Area. To this day, I've never found a better tasting granola than theirs, and I've tried a lot. The amount of honey they add is perfect.

I liked my poached eggs with toast and a large cup of cappuccino.

Homemade Cafe, La Note, Bette's.

I just woke up. This thread is making my bowl of muesli look especially sad.

Fortunately, I brought 15 pounds of Philz coffee with me to Paris.

Not in the Bay Area, but first awakenings in Monterey is the best breakfast place I've ever had, or they at least have the best pancakes I've ever had.

I've had pancakes at dozens of places in the Bay, including many of the places y'all mentioned, and none comes close to the pancakes I had at first awakenings 2 months ago... I think I had the daily special called white chocolate truffle or something? It was so good I've spent a couple of weekends searching for comparable pancakes in the Bay these past couple months. Crispy on the outside, melt in your mouth inside, with just enough sweetness and a small crunch randomly. Heavenly!

This is the only thing on this whole thread worth eating. Our fan base sucks at breakfast, eating granola, pineapple mousse pancakes, kale crepes and such ephemera. This is not why we fought all those wars

I lived in Monterey for several years, and First Awakenings is extremely good. I really liked their egg dishes.

But have you tried the Breakfast Club in Seaside (1130 Fremont Blvd.)? I don't think there could be anything better than their Banana's Foster french toast.

Brown Sugar Kitchen in Oakland is awesome for breakfast.

Got to disagree with you there, 75Bear. I went there once and will never go again. Insane wait to get seated and served for nothing special. One OK waffle and one piece of not so good chicken - over $15, no drinks and not including tip.

What do you like for breakfast?

Pancakes, omelettes, crepes, scones, burritos, etc?

No one place is best for all types of food so what type of food do you like?

As far as breakfast/brunch offerings, Berkeley>>>NYC. I was pretty disappointed with Vaselka and the other places I've tried up and down Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Maybe if our enemies were better informed, they'd hate the original home of granola instead, Switzerland and Germany.

The best breakfast dish in the world is only found in the French-speaking parts of Switzerland, the "croute au fromage", which is a thick ham sandwich drenched with white wine and topped with cheese (usually a combination of emmenthal and gruyere). It's baked in the oven till you get a nice golden cheese crust then topped with a fried egg.
