For those of you nostalgic about the Holmoe era when we use to beat D1 teams read this. I always liked Holmoe even though he wasn't a very good coach. His honesty about being in over his head is refreshing.

Great, the 1-10 former Cal coach is trying to encourage the 1-11 current Cal coach. Nothing to worry about here. Maybe he was thanking him for taking the title away from him for "Worst Cal season." :rollinglaugh::rollinglaugh::rollinglaugh:

Good God those were painful years. Sadly, those were also my years as a Cal undergrad--I never got to see the axe!

I always liked Holmoe. How refreshing to see a guy who clearly needed to be fired actually resign when it was clear that he wasn't doing his job. Glad to see he's doing well at BYU.

Same here. I never saw us win one while at Cal. My last year (2000) we almost won but blew it in the end. Vedder!

I actually would like to see Holmoe as Cal's AD at some point. If he has a place in his heart for Cal, and a stomach for doing things like going independent, any chance he leaves BYU if Sandy's seat is vacant?

And yes I too was a Cal student of the Holmoe era '99 (I transferred from a JC in '97 so I didn't even get Mariucci for that one year).

I believe Holmoe played at byu, so that's a tough sell to bring him here.

4 of my 5 years were Holmoe. What's an axe?

Well, we're playing BYU next year, so expect to see some more Holmoe articles.

Nice guy, but in way over his head. But I appreciated that his salary (around $200k) was more commensurate with his inabilities than any other Pac-10 coach in his time (or since).

But the academic stuff was inexcusable. We missed what would have been a pretty good 2003 bowl game because of the cheating and dishonesty that occurred under his watch.

I enjoyed the article, .... or most of the article.

Unfortunately His comments about being in Pasadena when the Bears finally play in the Rose Bowl made me feel sick. Cal was close under Tedford. It seems far less likely with all the current issues at Cal, the performance we saw in 2013, and the upgrades across the 12-Pac conference.

I, too, would love to see Holmoe replace Barbour as Cal AD. He seems to be doing a good job at BYU with their 21 sports, and according to his own statements, he realizes that football is of paramount importance, and says he spends the vast majority of his time on football. That's a basic truth that Barbour just doesn't seem to understand. She is a huge liability to our football program, and her presence assures that we won't be successful in that sport with her as AD. She has to go, and the sooner the better. Hopefully, Dirks won't take too long to come to that realization.

I had my 4 under grad years under Marv Levy. 8 wins in 4 years
1960-2-7-1
1961-1-8-1
1962-1-9-0
1963-4-5-1

BTW-I'm so happy we could be a training ground for inexperienced coaches,so that they could be successful, later someplace else. TIC

Oklahoma before Stoops righted the ship, SC when they had their worst coach ever (Hackett was worse than Lane), and fucla when they were aimless... Those are hardly accomplishments to hang your hat on.

Nice read, but I don't get these suggestions of Holmoe for our next AD.

A) he has no ties to Cal other than his failed 5 years at HC, plus he's Mormon and played at BYU, which is why he's there
B) BYU has no budget requirements as a private school funded by the Mormon church. There is no way they come close to breaking even.

Cal fans have a depressing tendency to overvalue anyone who has been here despite overwhelming contrary evidence of incompetence

The Duke - not sure about the academic stuff. Iirc, two players got credit for a class given by the Vice Chancellor (Zaragoza). Is it the head coach's place to tell the Vice Chancellor that he is cheating? That part of the sanctions always seemed ridiculous to me. There must be things I forgot.
He was a pleasant man but the real disaster, as usual at Cal, was the AD. Kasser never should have hired one of the worst DCs in college football as head coach. But he did produce a better defense than Andy Buh.

It's because almost anyone, including Holmoe, would be better than what we have now. Cal has had an unbelieveable succession of incompetent athletic directors. Bockrath, Kasser, and now Barbour. That's enough to make you want to puke. Gladstone was the best of the modern era, and he wasn't really an AD, but a coach temporarily keeping the chair warm. Surely, for the almost $900,000 we're paying we could do better. Much better.

He still demanded and received a buyout.

Golden One - Absolutely on the money - what a string of bums. Maggard a mega failure at choosing head coaches (White was not his choice), Bockrath (worst ever), Kasser (should have kept to selling cars) and now Barbour. Gladstone was the only decent one.

I don't think this is right. They went independent, following the Notre Dame model. They have a HUGE following. I would be very surprised if they were very far in the red.

Unfortunately, Athletic Department officials knew what was going on but failed to investigate or put an end to it. Ronnie Davenport and Mike Ainsworth took classes from an associate professor of Ethnic Studies (not a vice chancellor). Football programs know what classes their players are taking, and should have been aware of the situation.

http://articles.latimes.com/2002/jun/27/sports/sp-cal27

Some publications ranked the #6 dirtiest college football program of all time shortly after it happened (dirtier even than Washington). Fortunately, other programs got quite a bit dirtier since then, while we seem to have rehabilitated.

No worries. My pleasure.

They weren't just bad, they were despicably dishonest. So was their professor. Terrible mess.
