Also, I've listed my edits to your post below:

"intelligents" and "imcredible". I'm not going to include your poor punctuation, improper use of tenses or other grammatical errors out of respect.

I remembered after I won the intramural basketball championship at Cal as a freshman, I gave an interview in front of my roommates and was quite articulate. I remembered to properly thank my teammates and family and kept my faith to myself. I wish these kids would show some maturity, poise and intelligents in these interviews. Guess Winston is not going to be a lawyer or middle manager of a tech company. Total fail.

Funny, during his interview, I turned to my wife and said this kid is imcredible and I was referring to his ability to articulate the crazy emotions of accomplishing the dreams or fantasy of every sport fan.

Get off your high horse. The kid is going to be a multi-millionaire for how good he is at things other than his ability to communicate, and he would probably be shocked at how terrible you are at your day job compared to how good he is at his (and yes, football is his day job). BTW, it's much tougher to be a Heisman trophy winner than a lowly lawyer or middle manager.

Also, you are a hypocrite for criticizing Winston for not keeping his personal beliefs to himself while pontificating to us with your personal belief that people should keep their beliefs to themselves. If you really believe that people should keep their beliefs to themselves, the only proper response is to keep your mouth shut. By criticizing Winston, what you are actually saying is: "People should keep their beliefs to themselves unless it is a belief that I don't mind being expressed; however, I am free to express whatever belief of mine I wish to express without regard to how someone else might take it." An arrogant, self-centered, and hypocritical position indeed.

Yes, not perfect English--and I see plenty of that on BI!! But absolutely perfect joy. I reveled in his happiness on his 20th birthday. I hope we get to see him in the NFL. Media folks should be drooling.

Agree about the infamous "tiger mom."

However, it's not racist to point out that many players in college, especially at low level schools like in the SEC or Florida State, Miami, etc., have a shockingly low educational level. I can't imagine how low Jameis' SAT scores were. What leads to racist characterizations, though, is that athletes from impoverished, African American communities in the South are more likely to singled out for ridicule than an uneducated white kid because of the strong regional/cultural "dialect" (hello ebonics), even though both kids are probably just as uneducated.

In any case, many of these kids clearly have no business in college.

I get that I'm being a bit of a d*ck, but I gotta point out that...it's NOT EBONICS. do yourself and everyone else a favor and remove "ebonics" from your vocabulary. it is a racist term. that doesn't mean you are racist for using it, just misguided. I sincerely doubt you are aware of what the true name of their language is otherwise you would have refrained from calling it something so derogatory.

As an aside, it's absurd that the intelligence of these individuals is being determined based on their performance on a racist & classist test (SAT). I am sure you can find academic papers, many have been written, on the biases of standardized testing, particularly the SAT. The test privileges upper middle class white America, by this I mean the language portion of the exam. The performance on the math portion does speak to the substandard education of the school systems in the South, as well as to that instruction is being given in the wrong language. Imagine being taught math, science, and all your other classes in a language not your own.

But I digress, what these students speak very well is African American Vernacular English (AAVE) which is not to be confused with Standard American English. Speak to linguists and they will tell you that it is an official language, and should not be confused with English. They aren't speaking English, yet they are intelligence is measured according to their performance on the SAT. It's honestly quite ridiculous that they are not taught English as a foreign language, and that they are denied instruction in their own language.

Relax.

Quote:

Ebonics (a blend of the words ebony and phonics) is a term that was originally intended to refer to the language of all people descended from enslaved Black Africans, particularly in West Africa, the Caribbean, and North America. Since the 1996 controversy over its use by the Oakland School Board, the term Ebonics has primarily been used to refer to African American Vernacular English (AAVE), a dialect distinctively different from Standard American English.

The word Ebonics was originally coined in 1973 by African American social psychologist Robert Williams[1] in a discussion with linguist Ernie Smith (as well as other language scholars and researchers) that took place in a conference on "Cognitive and Language Development of the Black Child", held in St. Louis, Missouri.[2][3] His intention was to give a name to the language of African Americans that acknowledged the linguistic consequence of the slave trade and avoided the negative connotations of other terms like "Nonstandard Negro English":[4]

We need to define what we speak. We need to give a clear definition to our language...We know that ebony means black and that phonics refers to speech sounds or the science of sounds. Thus, we are really talking about the science of black speech sounds or language.[5]

You are excusing poor performance based on race. That is pretty racist.

Also, "Ebonics" as a term for the specific dialect predates "African American Vernacular English." I am from Oakland, so I will use the locally coined term, "Ebonics."

Finally, African American Vernacular English is a dialect, not language. American English is not a separate language from British English either. Arguing that Black people cant learn in school because they speak African American Vernacular English is like saying British people cant learn in school because the speak English.

At first I thought you were just playing with us--mimicking The Onion or something--but now I realize you are serious. Thanks for giving me something to chuckle about the rest of the day.

"Thank you for calling the DMV. Please press "1" for Spanish, and "2" for African American Vernacular English..."

Ridiculous.

yea i agree with the sentiment that its a dialect. just like how people speak with a southern accent, or how people in hawaii speak pidgeon. its not a different language just because mostly african americans happen to be the ones that mostly speak that way. theyre not the only ones that speak a certain dialect of english, yet get tested for normal english.

There are also numerous immigrant groups that come into our country not knowing any english as well and being able to learn and do well in school and in those same subjects that you say are biased against African Americans due to language barrier. To me most immigrants have even more of a language barrier than African Americans do. yet many of them are able to overcome that barrier.

What interview are you referring to? It would help if you gave some context or a web link. Jameis Winston has given tons of interview this season, and I'm not even sure what you mean by "shocked."

"Shocked," as you were surprise at how articulate and positive he is? He is always very articulate.

Or "shocked," as in you thought he was a poor communicator, in part due to his heavy Southern accent? Winston is actually a pretty great communicator, which makes him a born leader.

I fully agree that the SAT does NOT measure a person's intelligence. that has long been known.

BUT are you honestly saying that for a person who speaks AAVE to learn he must be taught by another person who speaks AAVE. Since the two languages are similar could not the person speaking AAVE be assisted by being taught remedial English.

After all AAVE should be close enough to Standard American English to allow the AAVE speaker to pick up Standard American English more easily than some one who speaks only Spanish or Japanese, for example.

After all the objective is not only to teach the subject matter but to allow the student to survive and thrive using Standard American English.

Otherwise his/her opportunities would be greatly restricted in the US.
And he would be worse off than someone who speaks only Spanish or Japanese since there are areas of the world where the majority of the population speak primarily Spanish or Japanese. I am not aware of any places where the majority of the population speak primarily AAVE.

On a Cal forum terms like "language" and "dialect" should not be used as if they were opposites. They are not.
