I just saw this on the Cal website:

BERKELEY Cal head football coach Sonny Dykes announced a restructuring of the Golden Bears' defensive coaching staff on Wednesday. Defensive coordinator Andy Buh has been reassigned as a position coach, while defensive tackles coach Barry Sacks and defensive backs coach Randy Stewart will not return in 2014.

"Defense is a critical part of the equation in winning championships," Dykes said. "I owe it to our student-athletes to provide them with the best conditions for success, both on and off the field, and I am committed to hiring coaches who will develop our players to their fullest potential while being excellent teachers in all aspects of the game. I will look to hire a defensive coordinator with significant experience in that role who can lead our defensive unit to success in one of the most prolific offensive conferences in the country."

Would have been nice to have gotten this done back in December when the coaching market was getting warmed up.

We're retaining Buh due to his contract, right?

Will he be paid more than the new DC?

Wow is right. Even the players didn't know about this (in response to a tweet saying sacks and stewart were out):

I hope this ends up improving things. Now if we can just fix the offense, we'll be competitive.

addition by subtraction......first positive sign that SD realizes his ship has holes and was sinking fast, at least publicly.

So..... can we get any of our old players back now?

Also, are we going with on DL coach now? Any thoughts on whether we are keeping the right one?

Was Buh a respected LB coach at least at Wisconsin?

Well we have an addition $150K per year to work with, since we won't have to pay that in Tedford salary .

Good! The key will be who Sonny hires as the new DC. I hope he does a helluva lot better the second time around.

Unless Chachere is fearsome recruiter, I'm not convince he should stay.

And ST coach Tommerdahl? I'll blow a gasket if we give up any more punt return TDs in 2014

I preferred Sacks only cause of that entirely fitting name. I have no idea if he or Cachere is actually the better D-Line coach. I'm not even sure who is the interior coach and who is the exterior coach.

Why such the long waiting period? This should have been done mid December, and Dykes should have been making calls to coaches.

Hopefully we can land a solid DC, and DLine, DBacks guys.

We shouldn't need to replace Sacks who was the SECOND D-Line coach we had. Now that Buh is a dedicated LB guy, we have room for a dedicated DC and a new DB coach and we'll retain a single DL coach.

Fantastic! So far 2014 is smiling on Cal fans. Furd loses to MSU, BBall beats Furd, Buh out as DC (but kept at LB coach, where he's done well). Good things, good things. Hopefully 2013 will be nothing but a bad dream.

Keep it coming, karma. You still owe us a LOT.

I always HATED the fact that we went to a 4-3.

BRING BACK THE 3-4!!!

Good, needed move. While a bit late, this shows that SD and / or SB get it. (Was this pushed by SB, or by influential Bear Backers?)

Keeping Buh on staff probably saves them about $200,000 per year.

What is the perceived advantage of the 3-4? Easier to recruit talented 240-pound LBs than talented 290-pound linemen?

Doesn't exactly save us money because we're basically trading two position coach salaries for another DC salary plus position coach salary. (Cause you know the new DC isn't going to tolerate being paid less than Buh who has been relegated to LB coach or something).

I would have to assume some preliminary discussions have taken place with various coaches and that replacements are already pending for the newly open positions. If not, it's absolutely incomprehensible why the AD would wait this long to authorize a move. Although she is a bumbling muppet so I wouldn't be totally surprised.

It doesn't save us money per se, but it's a palatable solution compared to firing Buh and then paying a new DC the same or similar per year salary. That was never going to happen.

Exactly this. There are just inherently way more 240lb athletic guys than 290lb athletic guys.

Hardy got hired as LB coach in Tampa along with Teddy and the other band members. He played in Tampa under Lovie Smith I believe.

And NOW, Sonny needs to make the same moves on the offensive staff, like OL coach.

I would have presumed Dykes would have know EXACTLY who he wanted as a DC when he was preparing for the Cal HC position, but then we ended up with the underwhelming Buh hire. I'm not expecting drastic improvement for 2014 with the hire (based on the players remaining and the difficulty we'll have with recruiting), but this has to be a hire that will instill confidence and fire up the team.

You still drinkin the Sonny Delight? This late decision to get a second tier DC (who is coming for the one or two years left for SD?) does nothing for the de-commits, commits, or potential recruits that will have more changes to deal with next year. Let's start all over again!! Yay!! Let the optimism spill! :cheer

Plus I think it gives you what you MUST have in the current version of the Pac-12 - lateral contain. Now yes. Furd skews the other way and has been having success by doing that (until RB) but most Pac-12 programs are going to force you to edge contain over and over and over and over and over during the course of the game. Our 4-3 was unable repeatedly to do that. Happy to sacrifice a bit of off tackle uberness to stop huge plays.

The market for coaches is very "fluid" right now, with all the changes at the NFL level which will ripple down into the College ranks.

Well so much for those posters who said:
Sonny is too stubborn to change.
Sonny is too loyal to his staff and supports them ahead of the players.
Sonny doesn't really care what the fans think.
Sonny is too dumb to see that the Cal D was terrible in 2013.

I'd like to point out that Sacks, Stewart, and Buh were all hired from outside his LaTech circle and no one that came from LaTech with him has been replaced yet. In fact, not surprising that he axed those from outside his circle first rather than look to "his guys." (Chachere was on the same staff as Dykes in 1998 at Northeast Lousiana).
