He's been at Tenn and USC. Not exactly tough places to recruit to. Bama won't tax his recruiting muscle either. Let's see him recruit to Weber St.

I went on a recruiting trip to Weber St. in HS for football. They did a pretty bang up job actually, all things considered. They probably should have thought about how cold it was when I got there though, given that I had never been out of San Diego. I got off the plane, looked around, and pretty much said "nope."

Kiffin has dirt on Jimmy Sexton. That explains everything.

Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin? A match made in hell.

Being as objective as possible, I think it's a pretty good hire. His style of offense really meshes with what Saban wants in an OC, and he's a pretty good recruiter too. He gets to continue to tinker with 5* talent and they will do well under him regardless I think. Seems like a win win to me. I think kiffin's head coaching days are over for a while anyway, so might as well go back to doing what he did well before.

Kiffen was a HC at USC fired mid season. He is now going to be an OC at a College. Tedford was a HC fired post season. He is now going to be an OC in the NFL. Does anyone know what the relative buyout $$ vs. what is owed by the University that fired each one is?
I'm guessing our contract with Tedford is way worse than Kiffen's.

Play calling is overrated. Execution is underrated.

Actually yes, he set a record for secondary violations as a 1st year head coach at Tennesee. I've studied this guy for years reading up on him. It would take me volumes but suffice it to say, he skirts the edge of ethics almost every where he goes, gives orders that are questionable, continually lies or bends the truth on a variety of subjects and is just about the most immature guy I've even seen give a presser. Much of what I've written can also be found on USC and Tennessee websites....and that is after you wade through the hate and vitriol. Most of the SEC coaches were pi$$ed off at him after his antics. He and Ed Orgeron orchestrated and effort for early enrollees at Tenn. not go to class the first day after he quit so he could poach them to USC...the list goes on and on and many Trojans will tell you the same.

Ok, but is his wife hot? Hotter than sonny D's?

Dude, I actually think Sonny's wife is more attractive face wise but then again, I like brunettes. Layla is hip and stylish but with a closer look, she has a blonde anorexic look to her....to each his own though.

If you ask me, Jim Harbaugh's wife has them both beat.....

It will be interesting to see how these two egos will be able to coexist. One has to surmise that this marriage will not last long for whatever reason.

Was the old Bama OC sacked? It seems strange that he would leave Bama for the same position at Michigan.

Not sacked but apparently they weren't too upset

"SI's Stewart Mandel thinks Saban wasn't a fan of this year's offense, and Nussmeier reportedly was interested in the currently vacant OC job at Notre Dame. Apparently Paul Finebaum was insinuating that Nussmeier wasn't long for the job yesterday, though I didn't hear that myself. The fact that UM swiped him mere hours after announcing Borges's firing would make it seem like this was prearranged. I don't think this was a, "leave so we don't have to fire you" deal, but it doesn't seem like Bama wanted to fight for him. "

I'm not so sure. Tedford started doing this late in coaching tenure here. I think it was part of what set back the program (it may have just been a small part). But what you consider "smart" may be desperate and indicate the wheels are not so tightly aligned there as we might think. Will be interesting to see how the next few years go.

And to add to the desperate comment-- I'm not a huge Kiffin fan, nor do I think he is an offensive genius -- just a spoiled brat born with a silver NFL spoon in his mouth -- who has always been in a place with top flight talent [maybe not the Raiders]. I really don't like the Alabama hiring of Kiffin.

Remember the Mike Price scandal several years back? I suspect Auburn (and now Tennessee) will have some fun with the Kiffin-meister.

My first reaction to the news was "really, that's the best Alabama can do?", but upon considering it further, I don't think it's completely outrageous that Kiffin might succeed here.

He only sucked as a head coach at each of Oakland, Tennessee and USC. He did well as OC at USC in the period after Chow. He did have very talented players to work with, but Alabama has some talented players too. As far as SC's offensive struggles with Kiffin as head coach, they've only really fallen out this year. In his first three years as SC head coach, they were 4th, 3rd and 6th in the league in scoring. Not very good, but not disgraceful. This year they came in 9th in scoring, despite having all of that talent, which is pretty shocking and really testifies as to how well he got his players to quit on him.

At SC, I saw a team that had only gradually came to have no faith in him or respect him at all, not a team that was running a broken system. Eventually they just couldn't give their full weight to preparing for and executing his scheme because they didn't want to play for him. At Alabama, he may have less of a detrimental impact on morale for the simple reason that he's not the dominant source of their leadership--Nick Saban is.

The SEC coaching fraternity seems pretty insular to me. I can't think of too many SEC teams carrying former Pac coordinators, and the reverse is true too, whereas there's guys from pretty much all there other conferences around the Pac-12. If Saban wants Kiffin as OC, despite all the negative things that have been said of him, and despite how his offense tanked at SC, it does say something.

The "modernization" aspect doesn't really add up. Kiffin's offense actually seems rather conventional to me. The offense Kiffin is taking over doesn't seem much different than the one Kiffin himself runs. A little heavier perhaps, more basic, more grounded and less intricate, but similar creatures. If he really wanted to get new concepts into his offense, it seems to me he should have brought in someone like Noel Mazzone or Scott Frost.

Even though I do not believe it is certain this hire will result in failure, it is surprising to me that it happened anyway. Alabama can almost certainly do better--it doesn't seem there's much of a potential to have it be more than a modest success, and could turn into a distraction if Kiffin's personality sows the kind of discord he's left pretty much everywhere he's been since he left SC the first time.
