My guess: not happy about Sacks getting fired

Ouch.

I mean....ouch. This one hurts.

He doesn't strike me as ready for the NFL. NOT bashing him, just think he has just recently started playing well and being conditioned enough to play in full games....he'd really benefit from another year I'd think but of course, all the best to him.

This was the kid that was really high on Cal, right?

Looks like Sonny won't even have to wait for injuries next year for his excuses...he already has them.

My guess is that has ZERO to do with it.
It likely has more do to with his evaluation and draft prospects.

This past year has been so odd as far as Cal FB is concerned. Just looking forward to moving on. Part of me thinks that losing players from a defense that was record-breakingly bad shouldn't cause us angst, but part of me also worries that we are losing some of the players who played well despite challenges. This is the kind of book that is so painful to read page after page that I would love to skip to the end of the book to read the happy ending.

I have no info but I'm guessing this may be a part of the reason. This decision is completely out of left field...He was struggling before academically so it makes sense for him to pull a "Jamal Sampson"

I agree DrD. Sad thing is that there is not a lot of incentive to come back to play for Cal given the current state of the program. Even a later round projection is likely to cause our players to go.

Moala was finally beginning to develop into a run stopper although not much of a pass rusher. Maybe academic struggles in combination with Sacks being fired could have triggered this move...The 2014 four star recruit from Bellevue, WA, Griffith, is a must "get" now. The two youngsters-Griffith & Hunter-in combo with the two jucos would be the Bear's two deep at defensive tackle.

Three defensive starters from the worst defense in Cal history are leaving after their juniors seasons for a higher level of competition [NFL]? I cannot believe what's going on...Why wouldn't he wait to see who the new defensive coordinator is and his new position coach (DTs)?

"Why wouldn't he wait to see who the new defensive coordinator is and his position coach (DTs)?"

Because he likely was going to go if he was told he had a good chance at a reasonable round anyway....Many of these kids are driven to play professionally, are not as interested in the scholastic parts and if the right chance comes, they go.

This one does not surprise me at all, all things considered.
It comes back to the fact that Cal has to attract student athletes who want to get their degree from Cal, as opposed to those kids who are only here to get to the league.

Has any school ever had so many players leaving early despite mid to low projections? Moala isn't even in the top 1000 draft prospects by CBS Sports.

Danger...I know you know these kids better than I but Moala doesn't strike me as an NFL caliber player right now...maybe with more reps but honestly, again, not bashing him personally, he isn't that great at the college level. As mentioned before, he was JUST starting to get a push and stop runs...how can he think he can compete at the NFL level?....simply because he is big and strong?

By the way, yes, we are losing a bunch of kids. Folks, Deal with it please. Another thread of "oh woe is me, Dykes is the devil incarnate" has been played out. Discuss the problem without whining and starting more crying jag stuff..

Nope. There was already room for close to a full class. If we are not maxed out already we will be after the normal spring injury retirements/attrition.

Well then we might as well join Davis in the Big Sky because all Pac-12 level recruits dream job is the NFL.

I don't know the kid, and I am speculating.
I think it is likely a combination of things, least of which is who his position coach is or is going to be. This is just another part of the culture change Cal has to go through to attract recruits that make it a prioity to get their degree. That's my opinion.

Also, the NFL draft declaration deadline is Jan 15th. So no time to wait to meet new coach(es) even if the hire is made soon. Plus it seems we already know the DL coach- he's currently on staff, and if he's going to be replaced by the new yet to be hired DC, that is not going to happen overnight either.

Is he home sick?

Conjecture about him leaving because of the staff is wrong but conjecture about him leaving because he's failing academically is OK? Nice. Way to trash our players.

Good luck to V. I loved the kid and his heart. I don't blame him for wanting to try his hand at the NFL.
