Homesick? For Sacramento?

In fact, going to any NFL team would mean being further away from Sacramento than Berkeley.

Sure hope all these kids get drafted!

I'm guessing some of these guys just don't like school very much... Hope they don't regret it 10 years from now

Recent quote by Moala

"It wasn't as fun of a season as we had hoped, but we'll get better," Moala said. "I still had fun."

I'll be a senior (next) fall, and I will graduate," Moala said. "I want to get into education, maybe teach and coach at Grant someday. That's a dream."

My questions is, has any school ever had so many players leaving early despite a 1-win season???

I wish V. Moala the best in the NFL and in whatever else he does. I distinctly remember that Moala was the first football player to introduce himself to me last year when I was working for the football team. I was feeling a little nervous and out of place, and Moala made me feel more comfortable and at home by taking time out of his workout to introduce himself and talk to me. He is a classy and respectful guy. Moala was also one of the players that spent the most time talking to my coworkers and I before and after practices. Great dude

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but I count 14 that have left in some shape or form (transferred, retired, dismissed, declared for draft) since Dykes took over. You can't blame Dykes for all of them but shoot, it's a pretty depressing list:

Allan Bridgford, QB (prior to start of the 2013 season, transferring to Southern Miss)
Khairi Fortt, LB (declared for draft)
Jonah Hodges, RB (transferring, destination TBD)
Kameron Jackson, CB (declared for draft)
Gabe King, DT (Midseason retirement for academic reasons)
Alex Logan, S (Midseason retirement for medical reasons)
Chris McCain, LB/DE (dismissed from the team)
Vili Moala, DT (declaring for draft)
Johnny Ragin, LB (transferring to Oregon)
Richard Rodgers, WR/TE (declared for draft, signed with agent)
Freddie Tagaloa, OL (transferring to Arizona)
Chad Whitener, LB (transferring to Oklahoma State)
Dave Wilkerson, LB (prior to start of the 2013 season, transferring to Arizona)
Zach Kline, QB (transferring to Oregon State)

Not sure if I missed anyone. I didn't include Bigelow since I haven't heard anything definitive on him leaving...

I thought it was illegal to smoke crack in the NFL. I've never seen anything like this. We should name the 2013 Cal defense the "Peter Principle Defense" - suck at your job, get promoted. I'm waiting for some NFL team to come after Buh.

SMH...

Good luck to him. I hope he gets drafted and remembers his time fondly.

The idea of having 4 different coaches in 4 years is crazy. No one knows what his circumstances are but he's making a choice so lets thank him for his work these years and hope someone can step up.

Technically they haven't been "promoted" yet since they haven't been drafted. I think this is more like quitting a crappy sitcom because you think you'll be cast in the next blockbuster movie...

If you are just going to go by anything then Lucas King also is out.

FYI Florida 7 transfer and so far 4 early entrants.

One would think that this would be a good thing: one can learn something new from each of the four, no? Yes.

Plus, if he makes it to "nirvana," he will have another one! LOL.

Pretty much this. With the lack of consistency at the coaching position,* he's unlikely to develop his game significantly more at Cal than he would in the NFL. Why not at least get paid to do so?

*I'm only speculating, but I doubt that the coaches have had him work consistently on the same techniques, drills, etc.

i have to say though, of all of our guys to go, i like his chances the least to actually make it to the nfl and actually get paid

Now Dykes can go grab some more WSU and Sacramento State rejects to get that top 3 recruiting class and propel Cal to the top of the Pac12...why didn't Tedford think of this?

It is quite stunning to see how long the list is of player departures, including several who were highly regarded recruits/transfers and who were key players in 2012/13.

Schools facing heavy probation sometimes don't lose so many! The transfers and early NFL attempts are the most telling. To me, they are saying I have no confidence in this coaching leadership and I want to try to continue my football career elsewhere, even if it means sitting out a year or trying the NFL despite a less than stellar college career. Very sad.

How much more of this Dykes shitshow can we take? Football programs are valuable to universities financially and for recognition. Get ready for half empty stadiums and record low donations.

Moala was finally beginning to develop into a run stopper although not much of a pass rusher. Maybe academic struggles in combination with Sacks being fired could have triggered this move...The 2014 four star recruit from Bellevue, WA, Griffith, is a must "get" now. The two youngsters-Griffith & Hunter-in combo with the two jucos would be the Bear's two deep at defensive tackle.

Three defensive starters from the worst defense in Cal history are leaving after their juniors seasons for a higher level of competition [NFL]? I cannot believe what's going on...Why wouldn't he wait to see who the new defensive coordinator is and his new position coach (DTs)?

We need kids who value getting the degree while aspiring to play in the NFL.

u know whats bad. we dont have enough linebackers to play a 3-4 or enough DT's to play a 4-3

Good post. I've never seen so many wanting to transfer, or committing to the draft even when knowing their chances are very limited.

I think of two possible reasons: (1) no confidence in the coaching staff as you said, or (2) Dykes booting them out, as he suggested after the Furd game. something about "go on and transfer, so we can recruit athletes who really want to play."

The problem is there're a lot of athletes who really want to play but don't want to come to Cal.

Is Dykes still assembling his top 3 recruiting class?
