Go over to weather.com to check the ads as The Weather Channel is having a showdown with them. Definitely another reason to lose them as a satellite provider!

In more than 11 years of having DirecTV, I've never once turned to the Weather Channel.

But they're hiring expensive talent, creating reality shows, and passing the buck to cable subscribers.

You say you have never watched the Weather Channel so you should have zero knowledge about their broadcasts. Thus your second statement must mean that Direct TV is hiring expensive talent..... and passing the buck to cable subscribers; a neat trick.
I must say that Direct TV is airing some very expensive, glossy and asinine anti-cable ads on network shows, obviously appealing to 'special' subscribers; a group that wouldn't have me. I have had Cox for 14 years in Chula Vista and Direct TV in my new house in Louisiana for two years. HD picture quality is better on Cox and internet speeds are much better. The Direct TV cabling was sub-contracted to the Spaghetti Factory; it makes Cox sub-contractors look exceptional. My experiences with Direct TV have made me accept and recognize the level of service Cox provides; that wasn't the case before I had some first hand experience in Louisiana with Direct TV. Some day I'll
downsize to a one bedroom condo; give up the internet as my keyboard skills disappear, and be a perfect candidate for Direct TV.

Oh, and I do watch the Weather Channel; Prospectors is more believable than Gold Rush on the Discovery Channel; I enjoy both.

most ignorant statement I have ever read from you, especially considering how clever and well-written your normal posts are. Weather Channel for 3/4 of the country provides vital and often life saving information. If cable was bought on an A la Carte basis, Weather Channel would do just fine. Maybe not for "its another day of 70 something degree temperature" outside residents, but, shocking to some-California isn't the whole world.

I don't watch Weather Channel either. Directv also has Weather Nation, is that channel inadequate versus The Weather Channel?

Not that I ever watched it for more than 2 consecutive seconds, but the Weather Channel lost me when it started with the stupid winter storm names. It was pretty funny when the NWS pointed out that TWC was just trying to get its own "brand" out there with this hare-brained idea. Nemo? Gandalf?

Yeah, I don't know if anyone really gives a crap about the Weather Channel anymore.

Lack of Pac-12 Network is enough reason not to get DirecTV.

If sources are correct and Dish gets the SEC channel I think Directv is going to be forced to get the SEC channel as I think fever for that will be higher than for the Pac 12 and people will line up to leave for Dish. I suppose I could be wrong and they only get SEC channel but if Directv is ever going to budge very high odds are that it will be this summer.

"Distributors in SEC country can expect to pay a rate of $1.30 to carry the soon-to-be-launched SEC Network, according to several sources with knowledge of the rate card.

That fee, paid on a monthly per-subscriber basis, is what cable and satellite companies within the SEC's 11-state footprint would pay to ESPN, the owner of the SEC Network. Outside of SEC territory, the channel's license fee drops to 25 cents.

Cable operators are certain to blanche at the network's price tag, which is more expensive than other college conference channels like Big Ten Network and Pac-12 Networks.

But ESPN could have leverage as it negotiates with cable operators, as it appears to be on the cusp of landing a deal with one of the industry's biggest distributors. Sources said that the country's third-largest distributor, Dish Network, has agreed to carry the channel from its August launch. The deal has not been completed and is part of a bigger overall deal that it is negotiating with ESPN. Dish's ESPN deal expired at the end of September, but the two worked out an extension, and they are still negotiating terms. Sources say SEC Network carriage is not a sticking point in these talks"

The weather channel has gone downhill and a lot has to do with their 'original content'. I have to side a little bit with DTV on this one, TWC is trying to get more money, but when they have non weather forecasts on for most of primetime, they are entertainment and not public safety like they are claiming in their plea to congressmen.

First off, if there are bad storms, there are local broadcast channels to do public safety. In fact, broadcast channels have a mandate to do some public good. Secondly, if power goes out, how's one going to even watch TV? Need a good battery powered weather radio or whatever. Third, they are based in the South and yes they do well with hurricanes and the like, but I find they are not so great with winter stroms, especially out west.

Finally, the INTERNET is great for weather forecasts. Especially locally tunes ones. Like there are a lot of good local forecasts here in Colorado that are tuned for snow reports at the resorts - which matters a ton locally. I don't think a lot of the WC forecasts are unique, and the NWS/NOAA also has offices around the country to make critical forecasts that TWC uses.

Also, TWC is partially owned by NBC Universal ie Comcast - this is the kind of thing what will escalate with vertical integration. Comcast can use their owned content to go after their competitors subscribers if DTV doesn't want to pay the rates.

there is never a time when there is possible dangerous/threatening weather that Weather Channel is not on with live programming.
Their NBC affiliation has made them more effective in their efforts.
