Is anyone else concerned by the fact that LOI day is just weeks away and we don't have a DC or DB coach yet? Two of our better DB recruits Koa Farmer and Quentin Tartabull were recruited by Snyder. Any concern about their commitments with a position coach?

I thought Snyder was dead??? On a serious note I don't think guys are coming here based on who our defensive coaches were and are going to be. The guys coming here either really want to come to Cal or they don't have any 'big time' D1 options.

This is an instance where insider membership pays off - at least in terms of what is going on behind the scenes (no I haven't heard any names yet).

prelim. names have surfaced elsewhere. unfortunately, almost all uninspiring candidates. I suppose Cal needs a big gamble type of guy...

Given all the transfers and early NFL'er, exactly how many schollies does Cal have to give this coming season?

I agree, as blasphemy as it sounds it was better to keep Buh until after LOI day than to have no one in place as things sit today. I mean what's taking so long? It's a defensive coordinator not Head coach. We quickly had candidates, so can he. He should call them and make a decision. any decision will be better than Buh. Watch me regret these words.

They (we) certainly do. There is no proven DC that is going to come to Cal and work in this offensive system right now. It seems like it is a graveyard for DCs. We need to take a chance on some unproven guy (I'd argue that Buh was 'proven') and hope he works out. On a related note, I don't think it is a coincidence that Oregon is hiring a DC from within the staff. Uptempo offenses can't be high on any DCs list to come work with.

Cal is coming off a 1-11 season, is in a stacked Pac-12 and has seen an exodus of players from the program. Why would any decent defensive coordinator want to come to a program where the head coach could be fired at the end of next season?

Lots of recruit visits coming next two weekends. It would make sense to me to have the DC announced this week.

To fire someone almost two months after the last game, two weeks before signing day, and still not be able to make a new-hire announcement pretty quickly looks pretty sad!!! Pull the trigger. Please...

was thinking maybe if the DC performs really well then he'll have an inside shot at HC when Sonny gets shown the door. maybe the new HC will be smart and keep the DC, if he performs well; unless the new HC is a moron, like SD, and lets go of a guy like Clancy.

Sad but vintage Dykes - a rolling disaster...

The DC position has been a revolving door the past few years. We're in a more difficult position than we were this time last year and, back then, we got someone unproven with a mediocre record. We've had a number of star players leave on a defense that already had a large number of injuries and was last in the P12. I'd be surprised we made a decent hire and also think we may end up with someone either unproven or some past baggage.

Clancy was let go before Dykes was hired, wasn't he?

I also would like to know how many DC's have been hired as HC when the HC was fired. Is that even a plausible scenario?

Yep. It's been an ongoing amateur hour since JT got canned starting with the hiring of a mostly inept coaching staff with little idea of how to compete in the pac12.

The decision to demote Buh so late which should have occurred the minute the last game ended is just another example that Dykes has no clue what he's doing. What the eff was he waiting for???? SC got a new coach fairly quickly and the staff was in place. Dykes waits until the 11th hour before LOI day to act. What a **** show

GrizzledBear, it probably depends on the reception Dykes receives at the AFCA convention. He'll be the one with a big sign saying "Anyone want to be my DC?".

Because if he really is "decent", he could have the inside track to the head coaching position when Sonny gets fired.

We've gotta get moving here. Visits are Jan 17 and 24 and whatever DC comes in needs to secure Griffin, Chandler Leniu (who just decommitted from WAZU) and nab whatever DBs we can get our hands on (Tee Shepard?) and hopefully one or two more LBs (is Tongilava underrated). I'm hoping Shay Fields can be flipped and that we get some more surprises out of Bosco. Not a top 3 class but would be as good as we could possibly hope given our record and recent exodus. Gotta stay positive because as horrid as this past year has been for Cal FB I'm sure even the most jaded poster here won't be bandwagoning over to Furd. We are always going to be Bears no matter how bad things get or how long it takes to get those Roses.

That rarely, if ever, happens. If Dykes is fired at the end of this season, I would assume it means Cal wins 3 or fewer games. Any coach would know that Dykes being fired would most likely mean that everybody on the staff is out the door with him.

Most coaches have families, and are looking for a situation where there is stability, not a one season run with a coach on the hot seat. imo anyway.
