I believe the coaching convention ended yesterday. And it was in Indiana

One website is reporting that Dykes is interested in Robinson, former Univ Cincinnati DC Art Kaufman and former USC DB coach Marvin Sanders. I guess we are only getting rejects. I don't know if they are interviewing for Cal DC or possibly DB coach.

Rejects? Huh?

Works for me. I would be happy with Robinson, Kaufman or Orlando.

Any of those would be a vast improvement. I like the old men .... Robinson's BBDB against Oregon in the Alamo Bowl only gave up 16 offensive points to the ducks. Kaufman has a good track record.

If another school is thanking you or kind of mocking your hire, watch out for the red flags. Remember the OC from Oregon via Utah we hired? Oregon fans were laughing at us when we picked him up. It turned out to be an uninspiring (so uninspiring I even forgot his name) tenure.

Especially since we play Texas 2 out of the next 3 years.

Robinson is out of a job at UT. Kaufman is out of a job with the Bearcats. Marvin Sanders wasn't retained by USC. I'm not saying they aren't good, but all three were let go from their last college job. :gobears:

That is because new HC's came in. Good coaches get released all the time when new regimes come in.

kaufman was hired by Tuberville, he was released by Tuberville.
USC released Sanders when Pendergast was hired, but nobody else picked him up last year, hence the HS coaching stint.
Robinson was out of work in 2012 and was a football analyst for UT when he replaced Diaz.

Again, I'm not saying the guys are "rejects" but they don't seem to be the most sought after candidates. Perhaps you can explain why that is.

Well, this is a quirky opening, too. Not a clean slate situation. The new DC will have to work with two holdovers who he might not otherwise have chosen. His boss has yet to solidify his position, so tenure might be up in the air to some degree. A top DC candidate might not have us at the top of his list.

OTOH, our D's have been so bad, not just last year, that there is opportunity to shine with any kind of improvement. Several good players coming off serious injuries (a double-edged sword). Guys leaving who might not have contributed that much, any way.

My worry now (gotta have one, at least, always) is whether the new guy, if he's been chosen, will not be at the "exit gate" to greet this week's official visitors as had been hoped. Do we have a new guy and, if so is the processing that inefficient that we can't meet a simple deadline? I would hope that Sandy would have gotten her ducks in a row for paperwork, beginning with the decision to find a new guy. Don't tell me she waited to start the process until the new guy was named?

I am too lazy to read the entire thread but here is the key to Robinson - he is at his best when he and Texas DBS coach Duane Akina are working together. Package deal or I am not interested .Robinson will run a 4-3 with a strog preference for man coverage . He is extremely creative with blitz packages but man to man with 4-3 and traditional MLB makes them vulnerable to dual threat qb. So bring him and Alkina in and they will be an improvement but until he shows a willingness to go to a 4-2-5, we will struggle with dual threat qbs. On other hand will play furd tough . So overall improvement but some issues.

You guys are delusional to think Greg Robinson would even consider coming to Cal as DC under SD.

Why not? It keeps him in play for better opportunities.

IMO if you were correct, it would make Robinson seem even more pathetic like Hue Jackson --- Have Vacancy; Will interview.
