Face it, we are a football factory that cranks out dumb, NFL players.

My guess: as the Pac12 and CFB in general become professionalized, and monetized, the players figure they might as well try and get paid. Also as schemes on both sides of the ball become more familiar/similar from HS to college to the NFL, many more are ready. QBs going into the league and doing well almost right away might be the big carrot on the stick.

...apparently we have gone from football factory to "wannabe bench warmer factory"

Rodgers will do well and his leaving actually makes sense - underutilized in this system, so his stock won't go up. The others... huh??? If you can't hack it at this level, what makes you think the NFL will be any easier?

Maybe Sonny is thinking to himself "I should tell them I was joking. On second thought - naaaah."

Have any of those defenders from the putrid 2012 defense that went pro done anything at that level?

Well good luck to them. I hear Canada and Europe are lovely in the fall.

kam actually played fairly well last season. he had a 4-5 game stretch to open the year where the opponent hadnt caught a pass on him, cause they were too busy torching mcclure. both kam and fortt i could see being drafted late.

the head scratcher to me is bigelow because of his past injuries. nfl teams are already going to be hesitant on him even if he runs a good 40 time just because of all his knee issues. combine that with no production and i just dont see an nfl team using a pick on him, though im pretty sure if he runs a good 40 time, he'll sign as a FA and make it to someones camp.

Steve Williams is still on the Chargers, right? Otherwise not many seniors or otherwise really talented guys. But the defense was pretty young.

Putting myself in each of the players shoes:

Brendan Bigelow, RB, California - Coaching staff has lost confidence in me. Makes no sense to try and transfer, staying another year will probably hurt my draft stock even more. Seems low risk to try and enter the draft now. Worst case scenario is I don't get drafted and I go back to a school (that's probably easier than Cal) and get a degree. Best case scenario is I get drafted in the 4th - 7th and make some money.

Richard Rodgers, TE, California - My draft stock is probably the highest it's going to be. I don't trust the coaching staff to put me in a position to improve my draft stock next year and I might get hurt.

Khairi Fortt, LB, California - Don't like this coaching staff. Already transferred once, might as well enter the draft.

Kameron Jackson, CB, California - Don't like this staff. Don't want to transfer and start over.

Viliami Moala, DT, California - Don't like this staff. I have NFL 3-4 DTackle size and that's hard to find.

I've never seen so many guys declaring after having mediocre years. Just weird.

At least the other guys on the list put up some numbers.

Personally, I believe that only Richard Rodgers has the ability to play in the NFL out of the five early entrants. The other four probably have played their last complete football game. They may get invited to someone's training camp but I don't expect Tiny Moala, Kameron Jackson, Brandon Bigelow or Kairi Fortt to make an NFL roster. Fortt was injury prone most of the time that he was at Cal (two years) so I haven't witnessed him play more than a few games. He's athletic so he has a low percentage of playing on special teams or making a team's practice squad.

It's amazing that 8 of 25 EEs did not earn Pac 12 recognition for their play in 2013 and that the Cal personnel made up 5 of 'em. The Black Mamba did earn
honors in the conference previously but suffered a bad ankle sprain on the opening kickoff vs Cal. He missed most of the season. Terrence Mitchell is a talented cornerback who has a shot but may or may not be playing on Sundays. The last guy was a Utah TE who caught 5 TDs last season. I don't know enough about his blocking prowess to comment on his chances. GO BEARS!

...because staying on board this train wreck isn't going to help them, nor is it something they see themselves enjoying

Maybe they are heading to Tampa Bay as free agents?

Any chance that Kline could go to Tampa as a free agent place kick holder?
Triple threat: hold, and run or pass if he muffs the snap.
TeddyBare could put a few fake FGs into his playbook.
Always room in Teddy's playbook for a few more plays, or a dozen, or a hundred.

I wonder if all the injuries 2013 played a roll in the decisions made by these kids.

While cleaning out Tedford's old office this was found.

I believe this was Cal's current playbook when he was fired. The index lists the pages seen in this picture as the 'fake kicks' sections.

I wonder what it looked like when Leach took over at WSU.

I wonder because I would guess that a new coach bringing in a new system (that you were not recruited for) that does poorly his first season would see a lot of turnover in transfers and early departures.

Also, given how we naturally focus on exceptional players leaving early, I would guess our built in bias would cause us to ignore when this happens in other years at other schools and the reasons why.

I dont like it, but it is not something that is overly unreasonable, I dont think.

The only player during the Tedford years that left early that had us scratching our heads was Morrah, but at least he got drafted.

Apparently he did it for his grandmother, who wasn't in good health. Wanted to give her a chance at seeing him in the pros.

With NFL careers so short, I don't have a problem with this. It used to but it doesn't anymore.

^ plus with the new cba, a player almost had to prove himself before he will get paid big bucks.

Agree that Rodgers might be a 5-7 round draft choice, and wish them all good luck at the Combine- (which is their only chance to get drafted)

We will miss Moala and Jackson, who could have helped this year. We saw how Bigelow would be used in the last few games-scat back who fumbles.....I like Muhammed and Lasco better. Our D-line was terrible, even if Moala has NFL size. Fortt had potential, but even with him we were the worst defense in the country. Bring in someone hungry to play. Look at it this way, we have more SCHOLARSHIPS!

You would expect more players to leave from teams where there is a coaching change anywhere. And add the emphasis on academics, and the type of players Tedford brought in who were told we are a pipeline to the NFL, and AGENTS who are good at making a profit over other people's dreams.

This is a house cleaning.
