Please forgive if this is a booth. Using a smartphone while remote is a pain.....

Day 1 of the all UCrugby tourney:

Cal 74 UCsb 0

Cal 42 UC Davis 5

Cal 81 UC Riverside 0

20 min. halves.

Tomorrow a stiffer challenge from UCla for the championship. Regulation 40 min. halves.

This team is deep! Great lineup shuffling by Coach Clark. You would like how this team tackles. Very strong ball carrying and distribution.More tomorrow.

I was a little disappointed in reading that there are only 35 rugby teams at the 1-A level in the USA. Cal and Colorado are the only P12 team. The Big 10 is well represented. Some others that I never heard of are Life, Kutztown, Underwood, Arkansas St., and Wheeling Jesuit.

Rugby Union is played throughout universities in the United States of America. College rugby is governed by USA Rugby, and not by the NCAA. More than 1,000 colleges have rugby teams.[1] There are 854 college clubs (511 male, 343 female) registered with USA Rugby.[2] College rugby is the largest section of USA Rugby's membership, with over 32,000 college players registered with USA Rugby.[3]

In 2013, several of the top college rugby teams withdrew from the USA Rugby D1A competition and organized their own championship called the Varsity Cup Championship. Many view the Varsity Cup as equivalent to a national championship, given the strength of the teams participating and the fact that the 2013 Varsity Cup finalists -- BYU and Cal -- finished the spring 2013 season as the consensus #1 and #2 ranked teams in all of college rugby.[36][37]

Disappointing that the PAC12 Network doesn't cover rugby. Would be more interesting that reruns of old football and basketball game.

First to SoCal: I really didn't key in on Tandy's play. He scored a try and the few times I noticed him, he seemed competent. Because his name came up among those I sat with, I asked someone what he thought of Tandy's performance and his answer was "solid". He's a freshman experiencing his first varsity rugby competition so there will be more to watch as the season progresses.

For 80Bear, The Pac-12 Network will indeed be broadcasting at least one of Cal's rugby games. The home game against UCla on 2/22 is scheduled to be televised. Cal plays UCla today for the Dennis Storer championship. UCla's team progressed a lot from this time last year to the end of the season, and today's game against the Bruins will be very interesting. Both teams will be even better by that 2/22 date, and it should be very entertaining.

I am hopeful that the network will pick up some more rugby opportunities. The game day experience at Cal is particularly awesome, and watching the Bear ruggers gives a person a chance to see the game played as it was meant to be played. Rugby is a great athletic game and is really fabulous to watch. The network is missing out by ignoring it. I hope they correct the oversight very soon

Looks to me as if Cal is listed in Men's IAA with 5 other PAC12 schools. Presumably, IAA is superior to IA.
