It's amazing for a school like Stanford to have so many great representatives of their university ...

John Elway
Mark Madsen
Tiger Woods
Richard Sherman
Jim Harbaugh

makes me wish Todd Litchi had gone to another school.

Sherman can be an ass. Brazen players and fans exist everywhere.
Enjoy the offseason Niner fans...next year you might get your revenge.

Until then...go Marshawn, go Hawks, and on to the Super Bowl!!

Hahaha. Sherman is super smart and knows how to use the media to promote the Seahawks and his own growing public recognition. He and Crabtree are known to not like each other so the jawing after the interception on the national stage was a great setup for Sherman to promote his future in terms of face/name recognition, bigger paychecks and more awards and endorsements. It's too bad that Marshawn isn't a little more self-promoting and getting more recognition for his great play. Hardly anyone is mentioning his awesome TD run. Instead the whole nation is talking about Sherman and his outlandishly fun remarks.

great article:

Richard Sherman is everything one could want in a professional athlete. He is a walking example of the difference sports can make, of how one man can channel fierce intelligence and an almost frightening competitive fire into something productive and riveting. He is precisely the type of person you should cheer for.

Also, watch this video. Sherman really is a smart dude.

The fact that Sherman is a smart dude who knows that he's being an instigating ass makes me dislike him even more. He's smart enough to know better.

On a similar note, I'm also not a big fan of reality TV stars who basically act like idiots in public for a bigger paycheck. Sure, they are getting paid, but it doesn't mean I think it's morally acceptable.

http://outkickthecoverage.com/can-we-please-stop-talking-about-class-and-sports.php

Quote:

We want athletes, entertainers, and anyone else in the public eye to be "real," but what we really mean is we want them to all act the exact same.
With fake class.

We want them to utter the same banal cliches, put on a false face for television, talk like, simultaneously, everyone and no one actually does in real life. You ever wonder why 99% of athlete interviews sound the exact same? It's because everyone is acting, playing the role that countless athletes before them have played in their post-game interviews.

it's been so long since someone was actually honest, that none of us even know what that looks like.

And if you don't act that way -- a patently false way that no one truly resembles in their actual life -- then you're classless.

This argument is terrible. No I don't want Sherman to be "fake" -- I just want him to not be a total dick. I'm also not saying that he shouldn't be "allowed" to say or do what he wants; I'm saying that his words and actions reveal that he is a dick.

Great player, but I don't want to root for him.

It's crazy, but Sherman is somehow growing on me. Somehow I can even tolerate this playful acknowledgement of Furd's rivalry with Cal, where he reacts to a fan's incorrect answer about his football career with a Cal mention:

Now, if I saw a lot of videos of him harping on Furd, my feelings would revert back to negative, but for now I feel like he's very entertaining (can't think of a more entertaining personality in the NFL at the moment) and contrary to what some would say, he's very articulate. I still recall thoroughly enjoying Sherman taunting Trojan fans who were leaving the Coliseum early in the "what's your deal?" game.

Here he is allowing himself to have some laughs at his own expense on Bourbon Street during last year's Super Bowl (perhaps the last such time he will be able to interview football fans without them knowing who he is):

As long as Niners fan hate Sherman, he wins. It's that simple because that's his game; get under your skins and make you squirm. Same as Muhammad Ali - mind games.

On the plus side, the Niners have a genuine rivalry and it makes the game better. The next couple of seasons in the NFC West are going to be very entertaining. Tell me beating Dallas didn't make all those winning Niners season better. "The Catch" wouldn't be the same against another team.

It's like the Giants - Dodgers. The hate and rivalry made things better, now it's sorta weak sauce. OTOH, no one expects Bay Area fans to chant "BEAT SEATTLE".

I completely agree. The point here has nothing to do with people being "real" or otherwise. Sherman was always a jerk with emotional issues, starting from his youth, continuing through his college years (remember his late hits in the endzone on Marshawn?) and now in the NFL. And his non-linear antics have escalated to what happened this weekend. The reaction Sherman is getting is not because he was "real", the reaction comes because he is a jackass.

I wish we were just talking about Marshawn, how he represented in his play and otherwise. Instead, we have the defense of asinine behavior in the name of keeping things "interesting" and "real".

Can Sherman be a good kid (like an old stanford poster kept on insisting)? Yes he can. Does he choose to be? No. He chooses to be a jerk.

Richard Sherman started playing cornerback at Stanford in 2009.

Marshawn entered the NFL in 2007.

Sherman can be a good kid. However, he is a ass on the field. Many players are . . . especially WR and CBs. I think this is because they are on an island and have to fend for themselves quite often.

He is a good person off the field.

He is an ass on the field.

Not much else to say except that the Niners would love to have him whether they admit it or not.

It's true, many players at those positions act like asses on and off the field. But I think there is a reason Sherman is called out for it more than most.

I agree. He is better on the field than most and he is more of an ass than most. He's good enough to be a CB and get interviewed right at the conclusion of the NFC championship. He is also loud and obnoxious enough to be the one that gets interviewed too.

Sherman may be a rabid dog during the game but he's a student of the game off the field. A pretty interesting video at the end of this point (NFL Tuening Point):

Watch the video and you'll see exactly what happened last night.

One thing you have to give him is that he's a pretty smart football player. Unlike Sanders or some other physical freaks that often dominate the CB position, he got to be an all-pro more by being a student of the game.

Most DBs would have gone for the pick or just deflected the pass, but he is aware of where his teammate is through the play and goes for the tip in order to create a game-winning turnover. Brilliant play.

He's a bit of a jerk, no question, but gets bonus points for being a Hairball hatter, and kudos to Carroll for seeing more value in him than his former coach did and for shaping him into an all-pro. One of the reasons I like the Seahawks is that it seems like it's a P10-heavy team (about a dozen players including many of their stars) with a lot of castoff players that weren't properly valued elsewhere (see Lynch and Buffalo).

That's another big problem with the Seahawks: they're in Seattle. Hard to stomach the thought that so many of those fans are also Husky fans. I just tell myself they're mostly Cougs to get through it. That and the fact that a bunch of mutts worship a Cal great is awesome.

The Seahawks blowing up would take some of the sail out of the husky worship the Seattle. College football was bigger in the Bay Area before the 9ers Walsh dynasty dominated the local sports scene. Also, there is a lot of California talent on that roster, an Carroll is from the Bay Area, so it's not much of a homegrown team.

It would be amazing if Marshawn got the SB MVP, that would make it 2 out of the last 4 going to Cal alums!

Yes, my bad. I got my idiotic cardinal DBs mixed up.

There are certain psyches needed to succeed at corner and it pushes most personalities to the limit, but as in most clueless people, these two don't know where the line is and how not to cross it.

This explains it:

“I ran over to Crabtree to shake his hand but he ignored me,” Sherman said. “I patted him, stuck out my hand and said, ‘Good game, good game.’ That’s when he shoved my face, and that’s when I went off.

That makes total sense. No Stanford graduate could be that stupid....

Thanks for finding and posting the interchange that led to Sherman's popping off a few seconds later. Crabtree was being the AH by not shaking hands with Sherman. Similar to his whiny coach and to the dimwit on the 49er sidelines who purposely tripped the Seahawk trying to cover the kick.

No worries, it's an easy thing to do. I actually said to my wife after we watched Sherman's tirade live, "He's a new-age Leigh Torrence, with a little more talent."

(Cue Stanfurd Observer to tell me how Torrence was really a good dude, and he shouldn't be judged by a few incidents of poor sportsmanship on the field yada yada)

When I saw his outburst and started this thread, I didnt recognize him, or notice he was a Furd...

Today, all day, everything I read or heard was trying to absolve him because of "the heat of the moment" and "he is from Stanfurd" or worse "he got straight As"

I find it very sad that people in this country think going to Stanfurd makes you any less of a douchebag. I am just about 100% sure, from experience, that they actively teach douchebaggery.
