We're about to get screwed aren't we?

I can already imagine this chain of events unfolding in some Cal offices somewhere.

Sonny finds two respectable guys who would be immediate upgrades. However they're asking for a bit more money than the previous guys (and probably deserve it).

He sends the deals to stunned administrations who can't even imagine paying that much money for mere football assistant coaches and can only imagine the outcry from the powerful academic factions. The people in charge balk at the idea of charging more money for a 1-11 football team. They stall, they try and negotiate down salaries, hope the candidates get cold feet from the bizarre bureaucracy and move on to more football-friendly schools.

Sonny has to go back into the bucket and find retreads. We're back to square one.

These delays only happen at Cal on the D-1 level. Amateur hour.

We are not allowed to have nice things.

We will get the coaching staff we deserve, not the one we need.

This would be the nightmare scenario. I'll choose to stay positive until it actually happens.

Wow, a preemptive apology for Dykes. Talk about dumbing down expectations!

Maybe they're waiting on them to actually get to California before announcing them.

The new DC and the DB coach are in the bag, as in on their way to the bank.

If Buh got 600k, any DC candidate knows they can hit Sandy up for at least that much. The new DC better not have an LB background, or we may get saddled with 2 LB coaches next year if this new guy doesn't work out.

Well, he does have recent experience as a DC and is familiar with Cal. Seems like a natural candidate for our opening.

Dykes can always lower his salary to increase available fund for the new DC. It was his mistake for hiring Buh at $600K in the first place. He needs to show an example of accountability :p

Then state who they are or cease the whole, "I know and you don't" act.

I am not buying the delicate situation thang anymore. Its a week from February. Who are the coaches we are bringing in??? Even the friggin insider board is (err was as of this weekend) just speculating and murmuring. If they are coming to CAL then lets get a move on, man!

The longer we don't hear anything the louder the skeptics will become.

the reality is a lot of these coaches have families. you think guys want to uproot their lives to join a coach that has middling or worse job security? the last DC lasted a season and got demoted, so now you have to be the new DC with the old DC still on staff? Does that sound like a situation anyone good would want to walk in to?

Any quality coach who takes this job... a 1-11 team that has lost a lot from what was already a porous defense in what is the second toughest league in the country... is going to demand $$$ and probably some guarantees in the contract.

You want a nightmare scenario? I'll give you my nightmare scenario.

The AD commissions a task force weeks ago to propose a strategy for hiring assistant football coaches. Their report recommends hiring from within, backed up with several PPT slides' worth of evidence as to how this strategy has been a key success factor for multiple peer programs.

Sandy hands the report to an outside consultant and asks him to identify a "backup" candidate. Unaware of what's going on, an AD employee does the same thing with another consultant. Consultant #2, unfortunately, hasn't been paying attention to Cal football the last year and recommends Buh as the ideal "promote from within" backup choice.

Sandy's top two candidates turn us down. She tells another AD employee to go forward with the consultant's backup pick. The employee thinks she means Consultant #2, and the paperwork to hire Buh goes forward.

Approval to hire Buh goes to a campus admin who, surprised at this odd move, emails the AD employee asking whether this is really what they want. Unfortunately the email goes into his junk mail folder and you know how much of a pain it is to constantly check that.

The admin, not hearing back, assumes it's a go and approves Buh. The employee lets Sandy know. She tries to stop it but is told that once a particular form is signed, the decision can't be reversed according to Cal's bureaucracy rules.

Aaaaand....that's how we end up with Buh being announced as Cal's "new" DC while Sandy and Sonny stand by smiling and pretending it's all according to plan. A couple media bring up the question of why Buh was re-hired, but nobody seems to notice or care.

Oh, and the employees get a promotion.

The amazing thing to me is that Buh and Stewart were on staff for the worst year in Cal history, left, came back over ten years later, and immediately the team "topped" that performance. Let's hope Buh doesn't make it 3 for 3.

My theory is the Cal HR department takes a really long time to go through the vetting process. Refer to last year's long delay on announcing assistant coaches. Monday being a holiday extended the process another day.......

Just saying.
