With the Kaufman Hire I bit the bullet and finally went HD tonight so I'm looking for a new TV. Based on the reviews people seem to be drawn to the Samsung linked below and are willing to give "a lot" up to have it (literally), wondering if anyone has it and why people in the reviews are saying its a must have TV. Please read the reviews.

LOL.....the reviews are hilarious. Thanks for the laugh....:rollinglaugh:

Oh, by the way, no wonder your spouse hates you you piker. Anything less than the Panasonic's TH-152UX1 massive 152" professional plasma display really doesn't do justice to Cal football. It's yours for a meagerly $480,000.00...plus installation you cheap POS........:p

No girl will want to go anywhere near you if you have a bigger than 85 inch pen1s.

I own both Sony and Samsung-I probably lean toward Sony, but can't go wrong either way. I don't worry about built-in internet crap and all that-too many things can you do to bring internet to your TV without paying more for the TV itself.
Get decent HDMI cables.

4k is pointless right now since it's practically impossible to get a 4k signal. 85" is absurdly large.

Think about this 65" model. It's the best at things that matter:

It's recommended by John Siracusa, who is probably the most anal, OCD guy you can imagine. Hear him discuss the considerations in this podcast episode, starting at about 25:20.

For those that haven't, you should read the review that the OP linked to.

Can't go wrong with Samsung. I have 3 and they are all good. My suggestion is to go to Best Buy or Fry's and actually view all of the ones you are interested in and then decide based on what you are seeing in the picture quality. I purchased a Sony for my mother-in-law based on what were great customer reviews that she had sought out, and it can't hold a candle to any of the Samsungs I own.

85 inches? Are you planning on watching it from a low flying plane?

there's something about the model numbers you need to check on with samsungs. they are using cheaper glass on some models, and it apparently shows. one thing i've noticed is that all tvs are 60hz. the claims of 120hz and 240hz, etc, are just taking the 60hz signal and doubling the frame rate to create the illusion of a smoother picture. i've never had a problem with any 60hz tv, and they are so much cheaper. plasmas are a little darker and better for darker rooms, but they also show black contrast a lot better. LEDs are notoriously bad with night scenes. all you can see are faces on stuff like batman on the dark scenes. they're amazing for sports though. i would get the cheapest LG, Sony or Samsung you can find that is 1080p, after doing the research about the screen glass quality issue. you won't be disappointed with any of those.

My 42-inch Samsung died last year, so just before the football season I bought a 51-inch Samsung 720p.

Got it in September. It's pretty sweet. Works very well. Picture is fantastic. (I actually got it from Best Buy.)

Size is all about room-size...26 inch Samsung in my stepdaughter's room is plenty big...46' Sony in my family room is good...I could go slightly bigger, but not much-I don't have a huge room

Just replaced a 40" Plasma with a 58" LED, sharper, brighter, clearer picture and the new flat panel weighs far less and is energy efficient.

Based on the Amazon reviews, I should get this TV together with a 5lb bag of Haribo sugarless gummy bears for the 2014 season. If we are doing well, I can sit back and relax. If we have games like those of 2013, I can just stuff my face with the gummy bears and have a good excuse for missing the rest of the game.

Anybody know where I can get a huge stencil to paint the Cal logo on the wall of my man cave? Is there a program where I can print sections out on 8.5x11 and then cut out the respective sections within the outline?

Most underrated part of the original post, IMO, is the bit about the Kaufman hire leading the OP to finally get a hi-def TV. Who knew our new DC would provide such a great stimulus to the economy?

I recently got the Samsung 75-inch version. It is stunning. It is interactive with all of the bells and whistles. Sitting in my media room makes me feel like I am on the field. Downside is that you can see how haggard the newscasters are.

But it was on sale. Don't think of it as having spent $40K. Think of it as having saved $5K.

Should have gotten the refurbished model.

Don't ignore Costco.
The selection is not as large s Fry's but if Costco has the brand and model you want, you can often match prices at Fry's. Plus there are a lot more stores and a very reasonable return period (60 days) if you should change your mind after you purchase it.

I'm convinced many people "sample" the large screen tv's during Super Bowl based on the # of tv's I see at the return desk in my Costco post Super Bowl.
