If JB enrolls in grad school, as has been discussed, could he play rugby for the Bears? He is prone to concussions but I do not recall many, if any, head injuries in rugby.

Track would have been more likely, but his "clock" started in 2007, so I am pretty sure that he is not eligible.

Ah. My first thought was "but Joey Mahalic was a pro baseball player for five years," but I looked at his bio and he went straight from high school to pro ball, so his college eligibility clock never started.

I wonder what could have been with his track career. What a shame.

since he has agreed to join our football staff as a graduate assistant, between school and coaching duties, i think thats probably more than enough to handle. he'd probably have to choose between coaching and taking up another sport if i had to guess. rugby may not have a bunch of head injuries but jahvid's are also of the reoccuring nature, so i assume it makes him a lot more vulnerable than most other rugby players. personally i wouldnt want to see him involved in any more collision sports

In the old days, as rugby was not a NCAA sport, other than you had to be enrolled in an undergrad or grad program to play there were no eligebility rules.

As with so many other things, the rules probably have changed.

Hmm, the wiki says college rugby is still not governed by the NCAA. Maybe you're right and he could play rugby. That would be awesome but I doubt the doctors would clear him to play because he was never cleared to play football.

He could be the next (and better) Carlin Isles. Get a chance to compete in the Olympics...

And in a twist of irony, Isles is quitting rugby 7s to get a chance to play for the Detroit Lions. Jahvid is faster (arguably), but is much bigger than Isles and a better runner. We also know that Jahvid is a damned good open field tackler, whereas this was a major issue with Isles (due to his size mostly - and knowledge of where to be on defense.)

College players generally have 5 years of rugby eligibility from the time they first enter college.

Even if it's not NCAA, apparently they have similar eligibility rules, so he can't play.

I don't get that either. If he could survive tackling, he'd still be in the NFL. Otherwise it's hoping a guy who is both injury and concussion prone will come play a full contact sport for no pay and with minimal long term financial upside.

If he has the physical ability to make a good living as a sprinter (and if its something he wants to do) he should be doing it. It's not too late. Jahvid will be 25 in a few days. Bolt was that age during the last Olympics. Justin Galtin won the bronze in the 100 in those Olympics at age 29, which is the same age as 4th place finisher Tyson Gay.

He'll have enough to do with coaching, hitting the books, etc.

JB is super fast, but I don't know if he's an Olympics-level track sprinter. Some grad students in their early 20s have played rugby at Cal, he might still be eligible.

Most of the hits in rugby will be blows to the trunk from a bare shoulder, no "hospital ball" situations (like when a player has to catch the ball while a DB is bearing into him) it's a lot more easy on the head than football. Concussions do happen in rugby, but not with the same frequency and intensity as in football. Yes, he'd be an amazing rugby winger.

Not sure where this rumor got started Jahvid is enrolling in grad school. He left after his Junior year, so he's going back to finish his undergraduate studies, not grad school. I spoke to him the other day and he's looking forward to going back to school and coaching next year

It's my humble opinion that in 3 years, if he were training hard core, he would have an outside chance at making the team in the 200 or possibly the 400m relay team, as they take alternates. His HS times in the 200m were much closer to where he would need to be compared to the 100m, and given that its comparatively a much harder event, you can make bigger strides with better fitness and strength vs just pure speed in the deuce over the 100.
