Exactly. We had an even worse run defense but still managed to have the very worst pass defense.

UMass Overall passing yards allowed was decent but if you actually look at the yards/attempt, they are 9th most allowed (which is better than our ranking) which means teams didn't throw at them because they were dominating so much in running, not that because their pass defense was any good.

Maybe the guy was there only a year and didn't have crap to work with after having coached at big Div 1 schools that actually had talent. At worst I'd give him a pass after only one year working with God knows what kind of talent.

So you want Buh back at DC? Did you set yourself up on purpose?

Wondering the same. Why would his most recent stop be at UMass?

He was convinced to go to UMass because of the intelligent posts he saw on the teams message board.

I'm saying to those that are finding fault with him that there might be mitigating circumstances...and being a DC who actually makes up the scheme etc is far different than a position coach who is teaching technique etc. Burns has had experience and success as a position coach....Buh didn't have much experience or success at being a DC so we know where the problem lies don't we.

I guess my point is that if you are going to assume that a bad run defense should result in a falsely inflated ranking of the pass defense, our defense defied logic. We had an even worse run defense than UMass, but we managed to also end up with the very last ranked pass defense. Shouldn't teams have just stopped passing altogether against us?

When you deal with extremes, the results usually defy conventional wisdom.

Well, our defense was extremely bad last year and, therefore, there is great probability that we will be better next year. How much better is yet to be determined.

I am going out on a limb predicting that, and I hope it doesn't come back to bite me in the ass.

So I am kind of with Tommie on this one -- if you can run all day, why bother passing?

But you have a great point looking at our D: Because it is fun to pass! Why get 10 -12 yard chunks when you can score touchdowns on 1-3 pass plays (at least if you were a Viking wearing Camo)!

I've muddled through this entire thread. . . .does anyone have an answer for why Burns went from the NFL back to college after only one year with the Bucs? Why he went from Purdue to UMASS after one year?? These are seemingly fair questions to raise if you can shiver off your "nega" rants. He seems to have moved a lot, rose up the ranks a couple times, so why the hiccups?? If that's even what they were.

His resume looks fantastic and I he IS a HUGE upgrade. Just curious if any of the people who portend to know everything know why the moves from place to place. He looks like the kind of guy we'd like to keep for a while.

Purdue hired a new head coach after Burns' first year.

Why he was gone at TB after one year? Here's one guy's take:

"In one of the ironies of football over the past year, former Tampa Bay defensive backs coach Greg Burns was fired by the Buccaneers so the team could lure Raheem Morris back to One Buc Place after a one-year stint as Kansas State's defensive coordinator. After Morris replaced Burns in Tampa, Burns replaced Morris, who was also the Wildcats DBs coach, in Manhattan, Kan. as the secondary coach."

The author of the quote, a KSU fan, was not a big fan of Burns, predicting (incorrectly) the worst for the ASU secondary: https://www.pewterreport.com/Boards/index.php/topic,347705.0.html?PHPSESSID=0vk9g8i7ekom0glqp65pohvc24

Awesome! Thanks, BA. I'm liking this hire more and more. Excited to see what Burns can do with our athletes.

UMass was just in it's second year of Div 1-A football last season. They had been a power in D-!AA before that, but it's a big hill to climb. It doesn't mean that they don't have good coaches, after all Chip Kelly left New Hampshire for Oregon. Yes, I know that I don't use the current FBS/FCS nomenclature, because I don't like it.

Also, what took so long to hire Burns

My buddy was on the staff with Burns at SC and gave our hiring of him 'two thumbs up.' Says we got a good one FWIW.

I think they had Manny Diaz teed up but he took the LaTech DC position. They had to go back through the process for Burns.
