- ESPN has 6 Pac-12 schools in its Top-40, but Cal is not one of them

I'm pulling for Cal and that means pulling for Sonny Dykes to turn things around. That said, I really wish SD would pipe down and keep his trap closed. And all that baloney about "stretch goals" is a load of crap.

Maybe it's a different culture Texas and California but standard operating procedure is don't say anything unless you can back it up. It looks terribly weak when you combine the other stuff like the gloves and wet ball drills for Oregon. Yes, Oregon was going to hammer Cal regardless but why say stuff like that?

In fact, no one here wants to read what the coaches have to say. No one cares about that. I don't understand why people interview the coaches. Just interview us. True Cal fans just care about what the experts on this board have to write, especially when the same point is repeated 10,000 times.

Insightful post? Umm, no.

We're in the top 43 if that matters. Kind of neat how we probably weren't in the top 100 in any football metric but still able to out recruit 65% of the other football schools.

How do you expect coaches to react when reporters ask them about their players or recruits? Would you rather the coach talk them up like Dykes or crap all over them like Gilbertson or Charlie Weiss?

I don't know why there is so much hate for Dykes for losing the coach speak, something everyone criticized Tedford for.

Need to stop evaluating Sonny based on what he says.

He says the right things, but the team's performance is what counts the most. And we all know he hasn't done jack squat.

This recruiting class is pretty respectable however...considering that he led the team to a pathetic 1-11 season.

So now the board is bashing Sonny for coach speak? What would you have him say with a mic in his face when asked about his players or recruits?

Smart coach speak would be to say, "We excited about the class we're building" or "I think Cal fans will be excited about the caliber of guys we're lining up."

Putting the "top-3 in the Pac recruiting class" comment out there, and then bringing home a top-8 class, suggests that he doesn't even know how to bu!!$#!+ properly.

For such a great communicator, he sure says a lot of stuff that he doesn't back up.

Turn on your sarcasm-o-meter. He communicates well in Ruston.

To get any kind of a turnaround, we have needed an immediate influx of ready-to-play JC talent. Seems like we have done quite well in that area. That plus a new experienced DC have been my own top priorities, so this gives me reason for looking forward to the upcoming season, along with some talented freshmen who will likely play from this incoming class.

I bet you just couldn't wait to post this. You waited a whole 6 months just to post this. Did it make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? It's NSD, couldn't you be happy for the job that Dykes & Co. did coming off of a less than stellar season? I guess the answer to that question would be, No! IMO from a recruiting standpoint, Dykes did a pretty good job recruiting after the 2013 season. He addressed some needs that had to be addressed going into next season.

I am excited about this class. These are pure Sonny and Co recruits. Welcome all! Looking forward to watching these student-athletes excel.

Reading about the players, I am encouraged. These are gritty, hard-working guys who will bring it each and every down. I could give a rats-ass about how many stars a player gets. Can they play? Do they work hard? These guys will show you. It is easy to complain about not getting the highest rated stars amongst other schools-- but that is a "paper" competition.

I will take substance. These players have substance and the determination to turn things around at Cal.

The context of his actual answer which has since been taken out of context was "we are doing pretty well and could end-up with as high as a top 3 class' (not sure if this was conference of division). In his presser today when asked about his statment, he noted some silents that didn't work out (e.g., Mixon) and there were kids who intended to verbal but didn't qualify (e.g., sounds like Tee Shepard and other kids who class work didn't count). But yes, in the future he should always use Tedford coach speak in the so we have no idea what is happening.

Dykes is in a no win position with this group. Bash him all you want about coaching, I don't think anyone would disagree with you. But constantly taking a negative slant on anything he says or does is a pretty crappy way to support the Cal football team.

See historically bad season and a 1-11 record. It goes like this: if you win, you get the benefit of the doubt on coach speak. If you lose, you do not. Cal just had a historically bad season. I'm pulling for Cal and Dykes to turn it around but he said it, so he owns it until he starts winning.

BTW, predicting a very clear outcome (top 3) isn't coach speak, it's talking out of your hat or butt. Now if SD said, "We're aiming at a top 3 class," or, "A top 3 conference class would be welcome," okay that's cool (and nuanced) but if you make a declaration, well you own it good or bad.
