Maybe those rumors of Harbaugh being interested in the UT job had some merit?

However, if the above story really happened, and I were JH, I would keep my options open for a better "big league" (versus, "bush league") job elsewhere….

Of course the Niners are going to deny it at this point.

This is all about:
1) Hairball being a jerk to work with and wearing out his welcome;
2) Setting up any Hairball contract extension (he has one year left);
3) Realizing that Seattle and Pete Carroll own Hairball and the Niners (Seattle is younger and better);
4) Understanding that NFL defensive coordinators have figured out the offense Hairball has Kap play; and
5) Knowing that Kap is not as dedicated as Russell Wilson and has perhaps reached his zenith.

Let's see . . . so nothing actually happened, and no one from either side will actually confirm on the record that any deal was ever on the table? Yet because "unnamed sources" and a couple of media guys claim it, this is a story?

Yawn.

Maybe he will go to the Rams if they actually get their act together and move back to LA in two years. The timing will be right and the owner has the cash to make it happen.

Even with Baalke friction, I don't see Hairball bailing unless he has an opportunity to take over in another major market like NY, Chicago, or LA.

I'm getting so tired of reading crap like this on this site I can barely stomach this site anymore. Where do you come up with this hogwash? Your (stupid) opinion or do you have an "inside" (Boston Market) source? I can't believe what passes for "owning" another team in this day and age......obviously anyone watching the Niner/Seattle game knows that any one of 10 different plays could have changed the outcome of this game, which went down to the last second. This hardly qualifies as "ownership." What a stupid comment. And secondly, anyone who knows anything at all about Kaepernick's work ethic wouldn't make such a ridiculous statement about his dedication. To the contrary,
his "first on the practice field, last to leave it" work ethic has impressed all his teammates. A couple of your points might have some validity, but too much of this is mere poppycock. You ought to run for political office.....you'd fit right in.

you do know Harbaugh is 4-3 against Carrol's Seahawks right? and damn near 5-2

Seattle is going to separate from the 9ers, they are younger, and their ceiling is higher.

Kaepernick's work ethic is irrelevant, he's a great running QB and an average drop-back pocket passer, and that's a pretty poor matchup for Seattle's defense. If the 49ers manage to get to the NFCCG in Seattle again, it won't be as close as this year's.

I know, because classic drop-back passer Peyton Manning did so much better, right?

And now you guys know why Greg Roman didn't take a HC job...because one is waiting for him.

If the 9ers had Manning at QB instead of Kaepernick, they would have won the SB this year, they are a much more complete team than Denver. Heck they might have even won it with Eli, or someone like Nick Foles.

Next year CK will have the same limits, but with a $15M salary.

I kind of lean towards the California Golden Bears, because I went to school there...

That does drive my rooting interests in the NFL, I root for teams with Cal players.

I tend to agree with this but it doesn't change the fact that this is a real story. According to ESPN radio, some folks in the 49er front office are concerned about JH's temperament. I imagine it is not the majority but still significant enough to generate some thought of moving him.

Even more likely, this is all about posturing prior to a contract negotiation. The SF Giants did the same thing with Ryan Vogelsong, making it seem like he was not worth bringing back. When negotiations are going on, a lot of lies get told in an attempt to lower the cost of the contract. Obviously you can't defame someone in the process. But there is a lot of grey area there.

Wow, just read Hairball wants $10m per/year or the top HC salary...without a SB ring. That's just nuts. No wonder the Niners are playing games or not. I think that's $3m more than Pete.

Word is Hairball is high maintenance and wore out his welcome at Furd. Interesting side note: besides promoting Roman, maybe the Niners will raid Furd again and grab Shaw. Shaw says he loves Furd but the Niner job is too much to ignore.

Yeah, I read that in Kawakami's column. Why have we (I) never heard that before. I thought he was beloved there. No wonder they love David Shaw.

This is all Kawakami wrote about it. I need details!!!

Quote:

As always, it’s stipulated that Harbaugh is a great coach, but he has never been known as a soothing, pleasant personality and he has never claimed to be.

He wins, and he also wears on people. Three years of winning with the 49ers, three years of wearing people down. Just ask the people at Stanford how they felt about him after four years there.

I'd guess that Kawakami's timeline is probably about what went on. I'd also guess that it was Mike Lombardi or someone from his team who leaked this after they got fired from the Browns (the timeline would match up, since the Browns hired a new coach back in Jan, but Lombardi was fired about a week and a half ago). It also doesn't mean that the trade of Harbaugh was ever serious; just all parties feeling things out in the offseason. Probably this kind of thing is discussed frequently between NFL teams, but it usually doesn't come to anything and usually the public doesn't find out about it.

There is no salary cap for coaches. York would be a fool not to pay harbaugh top tier coach money.

That was the read. Interesting note about Jed York already tipping his hat towards Baalke if there's a power struggle with Hairball.

David Shaw is 110% Furd, so it's easy...but I still think he'd bolt to the Niners if the chance came up.

I don't know why Shaw is a logical choice to replace Harbaugh other than the belief that a second Stanford coach has all the qualities of the first. I think the Niners are smarter than that

If reports are to be believed Harbaugh wants to be paid more than basically every other coach. Of course, that could also just be something he's saying as a negotiating tactic and he would really take less. Could also be that the reports aren't true.

As a Niners fan, I don't really see much to be worried about for now -- Harbaugh isn't going anywhere next year, and though he's done a great job it's not yet known if he is a truly elite coach in the Belichick model.

That's true HB04, head coaches have been severely underpaid, given their impact on the bottom line. A top-notch coach can add over $100M to the value of the franchise, Carroll for instance added something like $200-$300M to the value of the Seahawks. His market value should be at least $10m/yr. Harbaugh, while not as good as Carroll, is still one of the top coaches in the league, so his alleged eight-figure salary demand is not all that outrageous.

Only very recently did coaches salaries explode in European soccer, the top coaches are now getting $10 to $20M/yr. It wouldn't be surprising to see a similar coaches arm race in the NFL.

Mr. Jim Harbaugh,

I am pleased to inform you that there will be an opening for a Head Cootball coach at Cal this coming December. I, and most Cal fans, will be very happy to have you as our Head Coach if you can match your success (winning 12 games a year) in your previous job in Candlestick. Yes, the season at Cal is a little shorter so winning 12 games a year may seem a little difficult, but, please keep in mind that the competition is not nearly as tough as those you faced in your previous job.

Truly Yours,

Wishful Cal Fan

P.S. if you come to Cal, I promise to take back all those nasty things that I have said about you in the last eight years.
