I don't remember Connerly, but from your link, I can understand why it may have happened. It looks like he was promoting socio-economic affirmative action rather than race based affirmative action. Either way, Asians were going to be on the wrong side of the policy. Instead of being restricted by quotas, they would be penalized for the previous generations hard work to achieve economic success.
Of course, I may be totally wrong since I was a student when this whole thing started rolling. I was busy with baseball and school and didn't become aware of the whole thing until a couple of confrontations on Sproul.
