Quote:

An annual study of the schools in the men's NCAA Tournament shows a slight increase in teams that fall below graduation-rate standards.

The University of Central Florida's Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport said in its report Monday that eight teams that made the 2014 men's tourney fall below the NCAA-mandated Academic Progress Rate score of 930, equivalent to a 50 percent graduation rate. Last year, six teams didn't reach that benchmark.

Teams in this year's field that would be subject to NCAA-imposed sanctions that could keep them from future postseason play are: Cal Poly (925), Coastal Carolina (921), North Carolina Central (903), Oklahoma State (928), Providence (915), Texas Southern (900), Connecticut (897) and Oregon (918).

Relieved to see Cal NOT on that list. I'm surprised to see Oregon though. Could this impact their football post-season eligibility?

We're not on the list because we didn't make the NCAA basketball tourney.

Additionally, we're not on the list because Montgomery graduates his players...

I believe this is what one would call 'a silver lining'.

Sonny made sure we didn't make any APR lists for bowl teams either.

Oklahoma State ... looks like all Boone's money went into building monuments to himself and has no money for institutional (academic) support.
Same with Unca Phil at Oregon.

I still find it amusing that this is released as 'news' when the data came out in June 2013. This Institute is doing some really hard core research by re-releasing it near NCAA Tourney time.

By the way, Cal's MBB APR is 955. Good, but not great. Our score over the last two year is around 969.

Also, the year that really is killing Oregon's APR is 2008-2009, which was before Altman took over. That year rolls off the books next postseason, and they have a 2 year average of 950, so they will not see any postseason bans.

Uconn and Oregon's figures are kind of deceptive. UConn's APR this year was 1000 and they have improved tremendously since Calhoun was forced to retire. Kevin Ollie has done a really good job of emphasizing academics at UConn and they no longer are willing to take risks on kids with borderline grades.

As someone else pointed out, Oregon's APR is low due to the fact that over half the team transferred after Kent was fired. Over the past 10 years, I believe they've been near the top of the conference in graduation rate.

Providence is in big trouble. From what I recall, they've had quite a few players leave their program over the past few years.

Shouldn't Oregon's basketball APR be pretty high? Isn't Altman bringing in 6th year seniors for most of his team? Half the team probably just needs to complete the "How to Run a Sweat Shop for Fun and Profit (but mainly for profit)" course.

Dissing other schools for their APR rate is unbecoming.

It doesn't make sense that a school only 20 miles from Cal can recruit so much more successfully. I don't mean Stanford.

I have much disdain for those that can't let others enjoy ripping on other schools and have to ruin it by pointing out the negatives, etc...

And in case anyone cares, Cal's upcoming football APR (released June 2014) will be well in the top half of the conference. The kids have worked very hard this year and the team GPA is at its highest in years. Soon the story will be how well we have done to change the culture re academics, which is an important step for the kids on the team that deserve to feel proud of themselves for buckling down and getting the job done, despite the naysayers.

And good academics I think speaks to the discipline that it takes to be a good team, so hopefully it carries over onto the field.

And the reality is, this is a big deal, and needs to be applauded.

Very much so nyc. It appears that the de la salle dad took prof. Shocky's course in drawing attention away from where it belongs and aced it.

Sad. :rant
