Thank you Raiders for clearing the 2015 cap space for my Texans and for giving us a 6th round pick for nothing.

Schaub certainly fits the Raiders QB mold of the last decade. Well done.

You're welcome.

PS: I forget, how many Super Bowl rings do y'all have down there?

None. But we have had a couple of winning seasons since we became a franchise .... Something my childhood team has failed to do even once over the same time period.

My comment was focused around Schaub looking a lot like Gradkowski, Collins, Palmer, et al

The Raiders do seem to have a "type" of QB they go for ...

Schaub had zero guaranteed money, which means that the Texans could have cut him with no financial hit. So, the Texans got a 6th round pick instead of cutting him, which is not nothing, but most likely won't amount to anything.

I just hope he returns to the passer rating of 90 or above that he had the 5 previous seasons to last season where his rating was 73.0 (which was also the combined rating of Pryor, Flynn and McGloin last season ). By the shear power of mathematics the Raiders have to inadvertently make a good move sooner or later.

It's not a bad plan. Trade a low round pick for a veteran QB and draft another QB to groom for the future. The Raiders still have over $20M of cap space after paying Schaub, meaning they can go after Alex Mack and possibly trade for Desean.

Here's a list of the Free Agent QB's, I'd probably rather have Schaub over 85% of the names that are on the list. If it doesn't work out, his contract has no guaranteed money and it won't count against the cap if he's waived.

1. Michael Vick (Jets)
2. Josh McCown (Signed two-year, $10M deal with TB)
3. Matt Cassel (Re-signed two-year, $10M deal with MIN)
4. Josh Freeman
5. Shaun Hill
6. Ryan Fitzpatrick (Signed two-year, $7.5M deal with HOU)
7. Jason Campbell (Signed one-year deal with CIN)
8. Chad Henne (Re-signed two-year, $8M deal with JAX)
9. Tarvaris Jackson (Re-signed one-year, $1.25M deal with SEA)
10. Kevin Kolb
11. Brandon Weeden (Signed two-year deal with DAL)
12. Colt McCoy
13. Matt Flynn
14. Kellen Clemens (Signed two-year, $3M deal with SD)
15. Luke McCown
16. Derek Anderson (Re-signed one-year deal with CAR)
17. David Garrard
18. Dan Orlovsky
19. Rex Grossman
20. Curtis Painter (Re-signed one-year, $795K deal with NYG)
21. Charlie Whitehurst (Signed two-year, $4M deal with TEN)

Your data is incorrect. He had over $10MM in guaranteed money left over multiple years - and 100% of that dead money gets moved into the 2014 Salary Cap as the result of the trade. Had they simply cut him, the dead money would have been spread out - but this way they get zero cap hitt after the 2014 season. That's why the trade was so critical to the organization.

Let me be clear though .... The RAIDERS will owe Schaub no guaranteed money. They can cut him and essentially be out nothing. The Texans, on the other hand couldn't cut him without still being liable for the amortization on his signing bonus ($3.5MM per year for the next three years).

Trading him was smart financially for the Texans. It may also be smart for the Raiders. His $10MM base and $11MM cap number will help the Raiders meet their cap minimum. And, if he sucks and they cut him in August then they don't owe him anything.

Just one note... If the a Raiders don't spend the money on Schaub (Mr. Pick 6), they will need to spend it on someone else just to reach the salary floor. They will keep him just to meet their obligation even if he languishes on the bench.

A great trade by the Texans....

It's a great trade for both teams. Really a win-win for both. Texans dump a huge salary. Raiders get an upgrade at QB for virtually nothing.

It was either Schaub or Sanchez, NO, WAIT it can be both !!

Schaub & Sanchez

How cool would that be? Go Raiders! That would lead to a QB controversy more exciting than Longshore/Riley!!

That's a really unimpressive list of NFL QBs.

My Steelers certainly thank the Raiders for taking Robert Gallery instead of Ben Roethlisberger in the 2004 draft.

We usually thank them by losing to them whenever we visit them on the West Coast, no matter how pathetic they are.
