Hmm wonder what kind of hit he took, reminds me of Avery last summer.

the Indiana frosh WR who had placed into a medically-induced coma following a swimming accident (strong currents), is now out of the coma and has been discharged.

hope there is a similar positive ending for McKamey. bad offseason indeed.

First day of spring practice for them. It is this young man's 3rd football-related concussion in the last 18 months. By all accounts, a great kid, but as a 5'9" 170 lbs running back, he loses the collision in DI every time. Lets just pray he comes out of the coma and has a good life away from football.

Good news about the Indiana player. I remember seeing the thread from that story and people with heartless/judgmental comments about why he was in the ocean at that time and whether he was drunk from partying, etc. Whether or not true, comment threads are the lowest common denominator of civilization.

Incidents like these kind of shake your foundation as a college football fan. Is all our entertainment really worth it when it comes to incidents like this? Then again, it's a voluntary activity.

Maybe there some unexplored avenues for greater safety beyond just new types of personal foul penalties. Impact-absorbing clay or foam on helmet exteriors (logos be damned), detailed studies on how impact shock tends to propagate through helmets and head/upper body and can be minimized. Dunno - maybe it's all already been tried, though I'm not sure that it has.

Hope for recovery and long, normal life thereafter for McKamey.

Latest update from Annapolis. Rather than another concussion, it looks like it is either a residual effect from his previous concussions, or another undiagnosed medical condition.

"The family of Navy running back Will McKamey says their son faces a ''long road'' ahead after he was hospitalized with a brain injury,

McKamey collapsed during spring practice Saturday and was immediately transported to a hospital.

His family said in a statement released through the school on Monday the injury was not the result of a particularly hard hit. The statement said: ''Will did not sustain a bad hit or unusual or extreme contact. ... The Navy coaches have poured through the films of practice and seen nothing more than Will carrying the football normally, doing what he truly loves.''

The family says, ''We are in for a long road.''

McKamey was hospitalized in 2012 with a brain injury but was cleared to play after seeing four neurosurgeons and undergoing several CAT scans and MRIs, his family said."

Maybe it is because this happened to our Cal family, but it seems like this is a particularly bad off season.

Very tragic. Much more similar to our sad experience with Ted Agu - it sounds like it was not football-specific (no big hit - or really contact at all). He did play in some JV games last fall, so even though he had a history of a severe concussion, he was fully cleared to play. It's just not fair that a 19 year old with the whole world open before him is gone. Keep his family, and Ted's, in your prayers.

Not football, but a UCSB water polo player passed away while practicing last week. His parents were actually from Berkeley.
