while straight line speed for DBs is important, hip rotation, backpedaling, and footwork is just as critical for covering

i bring this up b/c people often praised guys like Adrian Lee for being fast, but couldn't understand why they frequently were unable to cover their man

edit: Squid was a good example. undersized and not too fast in testing, but had great feet, and very smooth

being able to be on a swivel is so crucial indeed

straight line speed for a db is very important, if he's blown the coverage and is trying to catch up :p

your other criteria is far more important

I used to run those exact SPARQ combines. First off, hand times don't mean anything when lasers are present. Second, at these combines the laser is only as accurate as the person pushing the button to start the laser...I don't trust a time until I see the timer. 4.3 to 4.5 hand to laser makes sense. The kid can fly, but a 4.5 won't automatically make him a recruit.

CAL offered .... the coaching staff wants him
is 4.5 considered slow for a HS player ?

Not really obvious why he got an offer.
His other offers are quite unimpressive.
Wonder what his GPA is ... at an Alabama HS.

I don't wonder what assumptions you are making!

lol, no, his speed's not a concern.

neither is his "ranking" or lack thereof. talent in the South runs deep, and a recruit will slip through the cracks unless he's in a high-profile league, or goes to camps. (ex. Trey's recruitment) although, it would be preferable if Burns could eval him live in a camp setting in addition to watching film. of course, assuming he has the grades/academic interest for Cal.

i doubt he leaves the South, though.

It surprises me that there still isn't a true laser or other sensors available on the start/ finish in order to remove the human factor. Some of these hand times are just comical

No no, 4.5 is flying. A TRUE 4.5 is super fast. Look at the NFL combine, and see how many speedy college players get in the 4.5s. Its great. My points were: (1) You can't trust high school (or college, or pro day, for that matter) 40 times (2) 40 speed doesn't make someone a recruit.

If he got a Cal offer, it is because he can play, and this time boosts his stock by reaffirming what is on tape and perhaps showing increased potential.
