other site reporting CB Malik Psalms (no rating) has committed.

Two questions:

Anyone know anything about him? and Will he wear # 23?

Watched his highlights. He's long and rangy. He devours QB errors. Appears to need some more strength as he tries to drive through on tackles but often seems to have to hold on for dear life after but makes the plays. SMOOTH.

Now problem is that it's highlights so.....no basis to compare

Apparently has a 3.5 GPA and, although recruited by Likens, he'll be a 6'2" CB.

Welcome Malik.

HUDL highlights as CB, and they list him as 6'3"

probably need more speed than strength to play CB. I feel like our defense got out-raced many a times.. and also missed all the tackles. but yeah. I'd like to see more speed.

According to MB's story:
Quote:

The speedy (4.47) 6-2/175 Psalms fits the profile of what the Bears are looking for at cornerback -quick, long and athletic cover corners.

Sub 4.5 certainly seems to indicate speed and he has size, around 6'2"?
Harrington will take care of the weight and conditioning.
Seems to have the great stats including a damn good GPA.

That's awesome! Thanks for the info. Kind of didn't expect the sub 4.5.

Interesting to see that we are targeting tall CBs. Of the top 25 CBs rated for this year's NFL draft, only 2 of the 25 are taller than 6'1" and the overwhelming majority are 5'-something.

According to the current roster, all our DBs are 5'10 or 5'11.
(roster, sortable on columns:

http://www.calbears.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30100&SPID=126513&SPSID=749428&DB_OEM_ID=30100

It'll be interesting to watch.
Maybe this was a one-time get of a tall CB (maybe S).
As a WR, recruited by Likens, his size and speed would be okay.
Getting WRs to play DB is interesting. An "average" WR, with WR hands and size, would be a larger CB than guys in HS who normally play that position.

Maybe this indicates that our recruiters are working as a team, for the benefit of the entire playing team, not confining themselves to just geography or specific position.

That is not surprising because only recently have taller players started playing the position. You need some to match up with the taller receivers in today's game. Especially in the redzone.

that's only a reflection of how difficult it is to find a taller CB that's as fluid and fast as a smaller CB

I thought our new defensive coordinator said that we would stop them at midfield? :sarc:

Our reconstituted DBs are playing against an outstanding group of our WRs.
And the WRs are not consistently burning the DBs.
We'll stop a lot of teams a lot of times before midfield.

Bill Walsh once said his ideal corner is 6'2" and 195 pounds. But it seems there is no magic formula. Some say speed is the most important skill but that doesn't account for Richard Sherman and others. Ultimately, there probably isn't any one skill that, on it's own, is THE thing. More likely a combination of speed, ability to know coverages, hips, burst, changing directions, size, footwork, etc, etc. Psalms seems to have good size and good speed, so that's a great foundation to start from.

Btw, here's a link to CBS's ranking of the top 25 CB prospects that i referenced before.: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/2014/CB

If that's his draft ranking then I think the reason for his departure isn't too much of a mystery.

There are 256 draft spots so if he's truly rated #570, they could go through the draft twice over and he still wouldn't get drafted. Ugh is right and there were clearly other issues in his decision-making process beyond draft position. I'll be rooting for him though. He's a hero in my book for his epic performance off the bench against UCLA when he has those three picks. Hope he somehow makes it.

Interesting that our first two "draft picks" are a 6'5" wide receiver and a 6'2" cornerback.
