Sally Field talked extensively about her brother last night on Letterman.

Here's the direct link to the relevant part of the interview:

Turns out he's one of the best scientists in the world.

He also graduated from UC Berkeley (BA, 1966) (PhD, 1971) and was on a gymnastics scholarship.

I might add that Fields was an AA gymnast on a very good Cal team. We saw Sally at one of the meets at Harmon.

Rick Field was an all american at Cal in an era when Berkeley was a gymnastics power. I was at a meet that Sally Field attended and was introduced as "The Flying Nun".

Watching the gymnasts during basketball half-time used to be an awesome treat.

Thanks for the memories.

For the record: I attended a Cal men's gymnastics meet long before attending my first Cal football game. (A close friend of mine was a fangirl.)

Don't know if he's really one of the 'best' scientists in the world, but it does kinda blow my mind that sally field's brother has a PhD in particle physics.

SonofCalVa - it was great - Fields did an awesome iron cross on the rings - small but very strong. The gymnasts of that time had a great coach (Fry?) and put on, as you said, a superb show at basketball halftimes. He was always announced as a Physics major.

Is this related to Gym Kata in any way? Wasn't that about a Cal gymnast or something? After looking up on Google, it was actually this:

I remember seeing Sally Fields in a brown cowgirl outfit at the competition; looking so out of place at Berkeley in the late '60s. Her brother's specialty was the rings and he scored well. Of course if she had come dressed as the Flying Nun or Gidget she would still have stood out. Still she was pleasant, signed autographs, and was there strictly to support her brother. Not surprising that she still does...

The movie was horrible. I must have completely forgotten that he was a Cal gymnast. I thought he was a fucla dude in the movie.

BTW, my wife is reading the book now.

I never heard of this movie. Was it shot at UC Berkeley?

I didn't think the movie was that bad. But I did see it a long time ago.

The movie was shot at UCLA.

Supposedly they used UCLA to make it look like Cal.

I always thought Sally Field was kind of hot. Maybe it was the habit. Anyhow, Burt Reynolds messed that fantasy up for me.

I can't believe someone else remembers gymkata, the best worst movie ever (IMHO better than The Room)
